The Science Behind the Poisoned City:
The Implications of Century-long Use of Lead for Drinking Water Systems

November 5 at 3:00 - 4:10 P.M.
SCI 201
Lead has long been used in plumbing due to its physical properties and abundance. However, connections between lead toxicity and human health were not established until the 1800s. Moreover, the use of lead in water pipes and other plumbing system components were not largely outlawed until the 1920s and 1980s, respectively. These industrial and legislative standards have shaped the basis for a series of challenges in controlling the presence of lead in drinking water today. In this presentation, the series of events leading to the crisis in Flint, Michigan will be examined as it pertains to the treatment of drinking water.
