Grades, Quality Points, and Computing Grade Point Average (GPA)
Every grade has a numerical equivalent (quality points) as reflected below:

Academic Standing -- Conditional Standing and Dismissal
Good academic standing is defined as a minimum GPA of 2.00. Students who fall below this level are considered to be on conditional standing and are subject to academic dismissal under the following conditions:
- The student fails to follow the recommendations made by the Academic Standing Committee to get back to acceptable academic levels. These suggestions may include repeating courses and/or reducing academic workload.
- The cumulative GPA is below 2.00 for two consecutive semesters. These cases are reviewed by the Academic Standing Committees of the various colleges.
- The student's GPA falls below the following standards:

It should be noted that students who have not done satisfactory work may be dismissed from the University for poor performance at the end of any semester after an appropriate review by the respective Academic Standing Committee.
Repeating a Course
When a course is repeated, the most recent grade supersedes the prior grade, even if the most recent grade is lower. It is the most recent grade that is calculated into the grade point average. The following guidelines apply to repeated courses:
Generally, courses in which the student received a grade of "D" or "F" may be repeated without limitation provided the student does not fall below the minimum GPA required to stay in school.
In certain cases where honor grades are required by graduate schools in a particular subject area, the Dean can authorize a repeat of a "C" or better.
Students who, as a result of extenuating circumstances, are unable to complete the required work for a course may request an extension of time from the faculty member. Such extensions (granted only at the discretion of the instructor) are given only when serious illness or other emergencies have prevented the student from completing the course requirements or taking the final examination.
The instructor can turn in a grade of "I" (incomplete) which gives the student up to 4 weeks after the semester is completed to finish the course requirements. At the end of the 4-week period, the "I" grade automatically changes to an "F" if the student has not completed the requirements for the course.
Change of Grade
Grading of courses at Rider is presumed to be a matter of individual faculty judgment. In those cases where a computational error has been made, or where work has been reevaluated through some pre-arranged agreement, a faculty member can change a grade via the Change of Grade form available in the Dean's Office. Faculty have up to 4 months to change a grade. After that time, signatures of the Department Chairperson and the Dean are required.
Grade appeals can be requested when the student feels that the assigned grade is arbitrary, capricious, or unreasonable. A faculty member's professional expertise cannot be questioned. Students should get a copy of the Source to examine the grade appeal procedure.
At the end of every semester, students who have had superior academic performances earn a place on the Dean's List. To qualify, a student must:
- have a GPA of at least 3.25,
- complete at least 12 credits, and
- have no grade below a "C."
