Liberal Arts, Education, and Fine Arts students
(Excluding Math & Science majors & double-majors)
MTH 102- FINITE MATHEMATICS
A student may qualify with one of the following:
- A Math SAT score of 550 or ACT score of 23
- A score of 18 on Part A of the Math Placement Test
- Successful completion of Math Skills Lab – MTH 100s
MTH 105 - ALGEBRA & TRIGONOMETRY
A student may qualify with one of the following:
- A Math SAT score of 600 or ACT score of 26
- A Math SAT score of 550 or ACT score of 23 and a score of 5 on Part B of the Math Placement Test
- Scores of 22 on Part A and 5 on part B of the Math Placement Test
- Successful completion of Math Skills Lab – MTH 100s for Science Majors
MTH 210 - CALCULUS I
A student may qualify with one of the following:
- A Math SAT score of 650 or ACT score of 29
- A Math SAT score of 600 or ACT score of 26 and a score of 7 on Part C of the Math Placement Test
- Score of 22 on Part A, 5 on Part B and 7 on Part C of the Math Placement Test
Part A: Basic Math Skills Placement Test
Part B: Algebra and Trig Placement Test
Part C: Pre-Calc Placement Test
Business students
- Students with an SAT Math score of 550 or ACT score of 23 or higher are placed in Quantitative Methods I (MSD105) for 3 credits. No placement test is required.
- Students with an SAT Math score of 540 or ACT score of 22 or lower are required to take the Math Placement Test.

Math/Science Majors and Education Majors with a second major in math or science
- Students with an SAT Math score of 650 or ACT score of 29 or higher are placed in Calculus I (MTH210).
- Students with an SAT Math score of 640 or ACT score of 28 or lower are required to take the placement test for Math and Science majors.
Writing
- Students with an SAT Writing score of 530 or higher AND an SAT Reading score of 500 or higher are placed into Expository Writing (CMP120) for 3 credits. No placement test is required.
- Students with an SAT Writing score of 520 or lower OR an SAT Reading score of 490 or lower are required to take the Writing Placement Test.
- Students with an ACT English score of 23 or higher will be placed into Expository Writing (CMP120) and no test is required.
- Students with an ACT English score of 22 or lower must take the Writing Placement Test.
Foreign Language
Please fill out the Foreign Language Placement form in order to register and take the placement examination.
Please do not take the complete online placement test on this site unless you would like to be placed higher than your initial placement indicates.
Who should take the online Foreign Language Placement Test?
The Foreign Language Placement Test is ONLY for students who are initially placed at a level that they feel is BELOW their abilities. The Foreign Language Placement Test will show both you and us which foreign language class at Rider is right for you.
Music Theory and Piano
Lawrenceville campus students with the following majors are required to take the Music Theory Placement Test: BA in Arts Administration, BA in Music, Bachelor of Arts in Music (instrument), Bachelor of Music in Music Theory (Piano & Voice). Check in for the Music Theory Placement Test is at 8 a.m. on May 21 and July 15.
Lawrenceville campus with the following majors are required to participate in a Piano Placement Hearing: Bachelor of Arts in Music (instrument) EXCEPT Keyboard Primary, Bachelor of Music in Music Theater (Voice).
Reading
Students with a verbal SAT score of 470 or less, or an ACT score of 19 or less will be placed into College Reading (CRC 100).
