Required for:

  • All graduate Sacred Music majors
  • All graduate Choral Conducting majors
  • All graduate Organ Performance majors

Students are exempt from taking this examination if they submit transcript indicating two years of college-level study in French or German with minimum grades of "C". Students should bring dictionaries to the examination.  International students may bring multiple dictionaries or electronic translators. Students may not use grammar books or reference materials during the examination. Students who do not have documented college-level study in French and/or German but through other means have acquired similar proficiency may be exempt from this examination by taking the College Board Clep test in these languages (view further information). These tests are given in various locations and require a fee. It is the sole responsibility of the student to arrange and pay for these tests and have the results sent to Westminster.

A literary scholar and composer, Catherine Adoyo eceived her bachelor’s degree in Music and Italian at the University of California Davis and her Ph.D. in Romance Languages and Literatures at Harvard University. In her graduate studies she focused on Medieval and Renaissance Italian Literature and Golden Age Spanish Literature with critical attention to memory and desire in Petrarch's Canzoniere and its role in the development of the lyric voice in the Western tradition, and the issues of authority and narrative structure in Cervantes' Don Quijote.
