Box 1: Payments Received for Qualified Tuition and Related Expenses
Box 2: Amounts Billed for Qualified Tuition and Related Expenses
In the tax year 2014, Rider University is required to report specific information on the form and provide that information to the IRS. In accordance with the final rules for information reporting, colleges and universities may choose either one of the two reporting approaches:
- Payments received by the student/family (Box 1) OR
- Amounts billed for qualified tuition and related expenses
Rider University, along with most other colleges and universities, has elected to report the amount billed in Box 2. Since the University has elected this method, there will be no information in Box 1.
Box 3: Adjustments Made for a Prior Year
Box 3 will include any adjustments to amounts reported on prior year's Form 1098-T.
Box 4: Scholarships or Grants
Box 4 will include all scholarships and grants that are administered by Rider University. We are not required, and do not report, any outside or private scholarships that you earn. The taxpayer is responsible for reporting any outside scholarships or grants on their tax forms or to their tax preparer.
Box 5: Adjustments to Scholarships or Grants for a Prior Year
This box will include any adjustments to amounts reported on prior year's Form 1098-T.
Box 6: Amounts for the Period Beginning January - March 2006
Box 6 will be checked if Box 2 includes any amounts billed for the Spring 2015 term. Most students are billed for the Spring term in December. If you were billed in December 2014 (in the 2014 tax year) for the Spring 2015 semester, Rider University is required to report that amount and indicate that inclusion in Box 6.
Box 7: Reimbursements or Refunds for Insurance Contracts
This box will not be checked since it is not applicable to Rider University students.
Box 8: Half Time Enrollment Status
Box 8 will be checked if the student was enrolled at least half time during the semesters reported.
Box 9: Graduate Student Status
Box 9 will be checked if the student was a graduate student during any part of the calendar year.
