Rider University will celebrate the global cultures and diverse backgrounds of its community members during International Week 2009 from Monday, November 9, through Friday, November 13. This year’s activities will represent various organizations and departments of the University, including Global Studies, Service Learning and Campus Life, explained Dave Keenan director of Campus Life and Recreation Programs.

“By approaching the week from different angles, we are hoping to engage more people in the week’s activities. You can find an international component in any part of your Rider experience,” Keenan said. “Students, faculty and staff should be able to come out of the week thinking about the world beyond here. They might decide to have their own international experiences or they might think differently about the world.”

On Tuesday, November 10, the students will have a chance to learn about the world of opportunities Rider University has to offer during the International Opportunities Fair. The fair will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Daly Dining Hall.

The entire University community is invited to attend the Foreign Languages & Literatures Department Fall Colloquium: Poesía, Música, y Sueños: Hispanic Dreams in Words and Music, which will be held at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, November 11, in BLC 245. The evening will feature poetry by Ruben Dario and Humberto Costantini and tango music by composer Astor Piazzolla. Poetry will be read by Dr. Hernan Fontanet, author of the recently published Fervor y Exilio and an authority on Argentinean poetry and Dr. Daria Cohen, whose most recent book publication, Demystifying the Female Body, explores the subjectivity of the female body in Latin American and Spanish texts.

Throughout the week, Daly Dining Hall will feature recipes from around the world submitted by various international students at the University. Other highlights of the week include:

Monday, November 9

Stress Relief from Around the World
11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Student Recreation Center

Lecture by Dr. Daniel Shungu of United Front Against Riverblindness
6 p.m., Sweigert Auditorium

International Pub Event
9 p.m. to 2 a.m., BLC Pub
(Must be 21 to enter)

Tuesday, November 10

International Residential Community Open House
5:30 p.m., Gee Residence Hall Lounge

Wednesday, November 11

Henna Tattoos
11:30 a.m., Daly Dining Hall

Study Abroad Panel
7 p.m., BLC 245

International Theme Night
8:30 p.m., Gee Residence Hall Lounge

Shotokan Karate Demonstration
8:30 p.m., SRC

Brown Water Coffee House: International Music & Culture
10 p.m. to 12 a.m., BLC Pub

Thursday, November 12

Sushi Making
11:30 a.m., Daly Dining Hall

Belly Dancing Instruction
7:45 p.m., SRC

Friday, November 13

International Week Wine Tasting
4:30 p.m., BLC 245

Fantaziya Ukrainian Dance Ensemble
7:30 p.m., BLC Theater

Other sponsors include Aramark, Area Studies, Brown Water Coffee House, Center for International Education, Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures, Global Studies, Recreation Programs, Rider International Student Association, Student Affairs and Student Entertainment Council.
