| In Memoriam - Anne Brossman Sweigart
With deep regret, Rider University announces the passing of Anne Brossman Sweigart, alumna, trustee and generous donor, on Thursday, February 1, 2007. She was 92 years old. Mrs. Sweigart was a 1934 graduate of Rider, honorary Doctor of Laws recipient in 1995 and member of the Board of Trustees from 1995 to 2004. Mrs. Sweigart made one of the largest gifts in Rider University history. In response to her generosity, the University named the College of Business building, which was completed and dedicated in 1988, the Anne Brossman Sweigart Hall. The rededication ceremony took place on October 1, 1997. Rider President Mordechai Rozanski, who attended her memorial service on February 6, called Anne Sweigart “a great friend and generous alumna who will truly be missed by the entire Rider family.” In 1936, Mrs. Sweigart, long-time chairman, president and chief executive officer of DandE Communications, Inc. of Ephrata, PA, went to work for the company her father founded in 1911, formerly known as the Denver and Ephrata Telephone and Telegraph Company. Her first job was as a telephone operator, but her business talents were quickly recognized and in 1941, she became head clerk in the accounting department. She was elected vice president in 1964 and elected vice president and assistant secretary in 1970. In 1981, she was elected executive vice president and secretary. The company’s board of trustees elected her chairman, president and CEO on July 22, 1985 to succeed her late sister, Bertha Brossman Blair. She served as a member of the telephone company’s board of directors from 1952 to 2005. In 2004, Mrs. Sweigart was elected chairman emeritus of DandE Communications, Inc., a position she held until her death. She was a pioneer in modern telecommunications in Pennsylvania. Under her leadership, Denver and Ephrata Telephone and Telegraph Company became a subsidiary of DandE Communications, Inc. in 1996. On November 1, 2004, she retired from her position as chairman of the board and president of DandE Communications, Inc. A memorial service was held Tuesday afternoon, February 6 at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Ephrata, PA.
