Continuing Studies and Graduate Student Commencement
Dr. James Byer, headmaster of The Hun School of
Princeton for 13 years, will receive an honorary Doctor of Humanities
degree at Rider University’s 142nd Commencement on Thursday,
May 10.
“Dr. Byer has been a creative school leader
who has long held a commitment to the concept of non-traditional
education for the working professional,” said President
Rozanski. “In addition, under his leadership, The Hun School
has seen renewed commitment to curriculum development, faculty
professional growth and support, and technological innovations
to support quality, private education.”
Dr. Byer, a 1962 graduate of The Hun School, served
his alma mater as a teacher, administrator and coach from 1966
to 1972. A 1966 graduate of Marietta College, he left Hun in 1972
to assume teaching and administrative positions at Pine Crest
School in Fort Lauderdale, FL. In 1988, he was appointed headmaster
at the University School, a college preparatory school associated
with Nova University. He returned to Hun as headmaster in 1994.
In 1970, he earned a master’s degree in guidance and counseling
from Rider and later completed Ed.S. and Ed.D. degrees in educational
administration from Nova University.
Tracy Lynn Durham of Jackson, a bachelor’s
degree candidate in liberal studies, will give the student commencement
address. William Stahl, Jr. will present the Class Pride Legacy
Campaign gift. Seniors were given the option to designate their
gifts either to the Class of 2007 Project: The Van Cleve Alumni
House Outdoor Patio or to The Rider Fund. Gifts to the Van Cleve
Alumni House Outdoor Patio Project will support the construction
of a venue for outdoor receptions and gatherings at the Alumni
House. Gifts to the Rider Fund will support a wide array of University
programs and areas including student financial aid, campus improvements,
and technology upgrades.
Kareen Foster of Dallas, TX, a bachelor’s degree candidate
in musical theater/voice, will sing the national anthem.
Music will be performed by the Blawenburg Band, conducted by
Jerry Rife, professor of fine arts. Dr. Sandra Stein of Lawrenceville,
professor of graduate education, will lead the commencement procession
as Grand Marshal. She will retire this spring.
