Seniors Khaleeqa Rouse, a global
business major, and Christa Tindall, a political
science major, and junior Evelyne Kruger, a political
science major, have been named co-leaders of Rider’s Model
United Nations (MUN) 2006 Team.
This month, the 14-team members will represent the Non-Aligned
Movement -- countries with a strategic and political position
of neutrality toward major powers -- at the annual Model UN competition
at the New York Marriott Marquis and at the United Nations. Debating
and negotiating issues of global concern, the team will compete
against more than 3,000 students from over 200 universities and
colleges in the United States, Canada, South America, Asia, Africa
and Europe. The conference, held April 11-15, is run by the National
Collegiate Conference Association (NCAA).
Now in its 39th year, Rider’s MUN team gives students a
simulated experience of how the United Nations, with its many
communities and working groups, handle and resolve world problems
and issues.
Team leaders are voted on by classmates. To be considered for
selection as a leader or team member, Rider students are encouraged
to complete coursework in such areas as international business,
global politics and international communication. Much emphasis,
however, is placed on an individual’s organization and interpersonal
skills, relevant work experience or internships, functional knowledge
of world affairs and past team-like experiences.
This year’s team members are: Daria Georgiyeva,
a junior global multinational studies major; Anastasia
Glodmina, a sophomore global multinational studies major,
who returned and new members Prisca Figaro, a
junior business economics major; Alexandra Khashkes,
a junior journalism major; Serena Koelle, a sophomore
political science major; Hedwig Lang, an Austrian
exchange student from Graz; Nadine Olijnyk, a
freshman political science major; Angela Schratt,
an Austrian exchange student from Graz; Sharmaine Stevenson,
a freshman finance and global business major; Matthew
White, a junior political science major; and Allison
Gibson, a senior global multinational studies major.
Delegations from Rider have been cited by the NCAA for numerous
awards. Over the years, other team honors have included being
named “Outstanding Delegation” four times, “Distinguished
Delegation” three times, and “Honorable Mention”
ten times.
