Softball Season Ends in MAAC Title Game

The Rider University softball season came to an end in the title game of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championship tournament Saturday, held at Marist College.
As the second seed, Rider defeated both the third seed, Canisius (5-0), and the top seed, Fairfield (8-1), on Friday to advance to the championship round.  Canisius eliminated the fourth seed, Manhattan on Friday and eliminated Fairfield on Saturday, and had to beat Rider twice on Saturday for the title. Rider needed just one win on Saturday, but lost 7-3 and 5-3.
Seniors Courtney and Brandey Weed and sophomores Jamie Farley, Heather Beintema and Kristen Kenavan were named to the all-tournament team.  Senior Amanda Tu led the Broncs with seven hits in the four game-tournament.
Tu graduates with the Rider record for games played in a career (213) and finished with 178 career hits, ninth highest ever at Rider.  Courtney Weed, the only other Bronc to ever play in 200 Rider games (204), graduated with 181 career hits, eighth highest ever at Rider.  Brandey Weed graduated with 151 hits, 16th highest ever at Rider.  Sophomore Heather Beintema tied the Rider single season record with 22 victories (22-7), and set the single season record with 244 strike outs. Beintema now has 407 career strike outs, just seven shy of the Rider career record.
As a team, Rider won 35 games this year, tying the Rider record for wins in a season set in 1994.
