Rider University to Host International Week

Rider University will sponsor its 13th annual celebration of International Week, starting Monday, March 22 and continuing through Friday, March 26 on the University’s Lawrenceville campus.
      “Creating Your Identity in the Global Community,” is the theme. Sponsored by the department of foreign languages and literatures, all events are free and open to the public.
       Activities kick off at 6 p.m. Monday, March 22 with an opening ceremony in the Bart Luedeke Center Student Center Theater. Rider President Dr. Mordechai Rozanski will read the Proclamation. Immediately following, a reading and discussion session will take place featuring Dr. Robbie Sethi, chairperson of the English department. At 7:30 p.m. in the Art Gallery, the foreign film, “Almost A Woman,” will be shown with an introduction and discussion led by Kate Henninger, a senior elementary education/Spanish major.
      On Tuesday, March 23 at 11:30 a.m., a study abroad panel discussion will take place in the Fine Arts Building, Room 205. During the evening, an International Food Fair will begin at 6 p.m. in the Cavalla Room of the Bart Luedeke Center and a student colloquium featuring award-winning student writers from the department of foreign languages and literatures will take place in Science Hall, Room 102.
      The next day, the campus community is invited to the showing of “Real Women Have Curves,” at 4:30 p.m. in Sweigart Hall Auditorium of the College of Business Administration (CBA). Following the film, a student panel and discussion will be moderated by Dr. Cynthia Lucia, assistant professor of English. Lucia is also editor of Cineaste, a New York-based film magazine.
     “International Careers” will be the topic of a global business panel that evening in Sweigart Hall Auditorium. The panel, moderated by Dr. Susanna Monseau, director of the global business program and assistant professor of business policy/environment, will feature Catherine Mercer Bing ’77, adjunct professor of communication and vice president of new business development for ITAP International based in Princeton; Joseph Campo '02, an associate in the Corporate, Investment Banking & Markets Broad Graduate Program at HSBC Bank in Boston; Betty Dymonski, international financial controller for consumer products at McNeil Consumer, and Jack Taylor, a consultant specializing in Asia, investment banking and emerging markets.

Among the week’s other highlights:

• On Thursday, March 25 from 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.: A Gender Studies Colloquium and Awards Ceremony. The theme is “Gender and Creativity.” The colloquium and ceremony will take place in Sweigart Hall Auditorium.
• On March 25, at 5:30 p.m. the play performance, Moliere’s The Amorous Doctor, performed by The Poquelin Players, directed and translated by Dr. Richard Swain, professor of fine arts.
• On March 25, following the performance – Foreign Language and International Honor Societies Induction ceremonies in the Art Gallery.
• On Friday, March 26 at 1245 p.m.: A foreign film and discussion regarding Patrice Lumumba, the charismatic African leader who rose rapidly to the office of Prime Minister when Belgium conceded the Congo’s independence in June 1960. The discussion will be moderated by Dr. Anne Osborne, professor of history.

     International Week activities conclude Friday with a foreign wine sampling gathering/discussion in the Fireside Lounge of the Bart Luedeke Center at 430 p.m. Dr. Peter Aberger, associate professor of French, and Dr. Thomas Callahan, professor and chairperson of the history department, will lead the session.
