Faculty Development Day to Be Held May 20

Rider faculty and academic and student affairs administrators will examine critical issues in higher education at Rider on Thursday, May 20 during the sixth annual Faculty Development Day.
     The day begins at 8 a.m. with registration and continental breakfast in the lobby of The Yvonne Theater. Two plenary sessions will take place in the theater following breakfast.  Dr. Laura Wenk, assistant professor of cognition and instruction and director of research in education and learning at Hampshire College in Amherst, MA, will open the day’s programming with the keynote address, “Teaching for Intentional Learning.”
     Dr. Don Ambrose, professor of graduate education, and Dr. Kathy Browne, academic director of the Teaching and Learning Center (TLC), will follow with their joint presentation, “Instructional Innovation at Rider University: Mapping Our Progress.” 
     After the plenary session, morning concurrent sessions will feature:

  • “Co-curricular Involvement and Opportunities – The Inside Story,” presented by Cassie Iacovelli, assistant dean of campus life, and Bridget Weikel, assistant director of campus activities;
  • “Students’ Narratives about Using Computer Technology in Their Learning,” led by Dr. Yun Xia, assistant professor of communication;
  • Integrating The New York Times in College Curriculum,” led by Ilene Skolnik, educational consultant, The New York Times
  • “Making it Count: Publishing Student Work as a Means of Enhancing Learning,” led by Dr. Edward Carmien, assistant professor of  music education at Westminster Choir College of Rider University;
  • “WebAdvisor and Degree Audit,” led by Sue Stefanick, registrar, and
  • “Getting Started with Stata,” led by Dr. Hope Corman, professor of economics, and Dr. Kelly Noonan, assistant professor of economics.

In the afternoon, six additional concurrent sessions will take place:

  • “The Brain and BRIDGE: How Might Learning Theory Inform Classroom Practice?.” Panelists will consist of Dr. Arlene Wilner, professor of English and director of BRIDGE; Dr. Jonathan Karp, associate professor of biology; Dr. Stephanie Golski, assistant professor of psychology;  and Dr.  Anne Law, chairperson of the psychology department. 
  • “Assessment at Rider University: Striving for Authenticity,” led by Dr. Phyllis Frakt, vice president for academic affairs and provost; Dr. Ambrose, and panelists drawn from the Provost’s campus assessment initiative;   
  • “X-Treme Web Searching: Practical Super Searching Research Tips & Techniques,” led by Robert Lackie, assistant professor-librarian;  
  • “Collaborating to Develop A Preservice Physics Course,” led by Peter Hester, assistant professor of undergraduate education, and Dr. Greg Schmidt, adjunct professor of physics;
  • “NJEDge.Net: An Overview of Network Capabilities,” led by George Laskaris, executive director of NJEdge.Net; and
  • “And the Loser is…” Castagnera’s Top-Ten Legal Losers of AY 2003-2004,” led by Dr. Jim Castagnera, associate vice president for academic affairs/associate provost.
