Baseball/Softball Play Home Openers

The Broncs began the 2004 softball season with a victory over Penn, but had to settle for a split in the doubleheader Tuesday. Rider then traveled to Greenville, North Carolina for the East Carolina Pirate Clash, where they won three of six games.
In the first game of the season against Penn, senior Amanda Tu broke open a close game with a grand slam home run in the fifth inning to give Rider a 9-4 lead, and junior pitcher Maddy Boulden struck out five in the 9-6 victory, while collecting two hits at the plate. Sophomore Jamie Farley began the season with a home run in her first at bat.
In the second game against Penn, sophomore Kristin Kenavan gave Rider a 1-0 lead with a solo home run in the fourth inning. Kenavan collected four hits on the day.
At the ECU tournament, sophomore Jennifer Cullen and junior Maddy Boulden were named to the all-tournament team.
In the 2-0 victory over Stony Brook, Maddy Boulden hit a two-out, two run home run in the fifth inning for the only runs of the game, and sophomore pitcher Heather Beintema struck out five for the shutout.
The baseball team was swept by UMass in the home opener Sunday.
In the first game, senior Eric Weiner struck out seven in six innings of work, allowing three runs in the 6-5 loss. Senior Eric D'Alessandro collected three hits in the first game, and sophomore Gene Crimoli had two hits, including a tape-measure home run to right field that cut the UMass lead to 3-2 in the fourth inning.
Sophomore Mike Bruschini led off the ninth inning with a double and scored on a sacrifice fly to cut the lead to 6-5, but that was as close as the Broncs could get.
In the second game, senior Scott Rich hit a two-run home run in the sixth inning for Rider's only offense in the 15-2 loss.
Junior Jonathan Rehm had three hits in the doubleheader.
