Rider’s Greek Organizations Rally to Help
Victim of Drunk Driving Accident
The consequences of drunk driving will be the focus
of a lecture/video presentation at Rider University on Wednesday,
April 30 at 10 p.m. in the Student Center Theater. Phi Sigma Sigma
sorority, in conjunction with governing bodies of the Greek systems,
will sponsor the event, which is free and open to Rider students and
members of the local community.
Danielle Morris of Toms River,
a junior communication major and law and justice minor, spearheaded
the idea when her friend from high school, Cheryl Dahl, became a victim
last October of a serious car accident caused by a drunk driver. Dahl
lay in a coma for one month and is gradually recovering. As president
of Phi Sigma Sigma, Morris rallied the Panhellenic and Interfraternity
councils for their support. During the evening, donations will be
taken to aid Dahl in meeting her medical expenses. Pins will be distributed
in exchange for a donation.
Morris will present Dahl’s
experience in a video, which she produced for her television/film
class. In addition, a representative from the Lawrence Township Police
department will inform students about the consequences of drinking
and driving.
“Ever since Cheryl suffered
life-threatening injuries, I have wanted to find ways to get the message
across to others about the dangers of alcohol and driving,”
said Morris. “I think that it is important for people to see
the consequences first hand. I also wanted a way to help Cheryl out,
too. Since Rider is such a giving community, I knew that many people
would support this type of event.”
“I really hope to get through
to students,” added Morris. “I’m lucky to have help
from the other Greeks on campus. I think it will be an emotional night,
but a beneficial one as well.”
