Men's College Basketball Rider Signs 7 Footer
Steve Castleberry, a 7'0", 235 pound center
at Dixie State College in Utah, is the newest addition to the 2003-2004
Rider University basketball team, Rider head coach Don Harnum announced.
Castleberry signed a national letter of intent to further his education
and basketball career at Rider.
"Steve is a young man that is
just starting to come into his own as a basketball player," said
Harnum, the 2002 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Coach of the Year.
"He is a very good athlete who can run the floor, block shots,
rebound and score around the basket. With the graduation of our three
senior centers he certainly fills a strong need in the middle."
Rider graduated 6'10" center
Robert Reed, 6'9" forward Tank Whalmann and 6'9"
center Vitor Goncalves this season.
Castleberry was a starter on the 2001-2002
Marist College team as a red-shirt freshman, and comes to Rider from
the 30-6 Dixie State team, which finished third in the Junior College
National Championships last year.
Castleberry attended Solebury Prep School
in Bucks County, PA in 1999-2000, after attending Clearview High School
in Mullica Hill, NJ.
"I'm very excited about Steve coming
back to the area, and I think he is a good fit for Rider," said
Solebury Prep coach Cleve Christi. "Steve will definitely continue
to improve and develop under the tutelage of Coach Harnum. I think
he will be a great player."
The 2003-2004 Rider schedule features
non-conference games with Massachusetts, Brown, Harvard, Delaware,
Monmouth and Coppin State, as well as a Thanksgiving trip to the Hawaii-Hilo
Tournament.
