CONNECT-ED Conference Brings 122 Science, Math Educators to Rider
The Rider University-led CONNECT-ED consortium
(Consortium for New Explorations in Coherent Teacher Education),
held its third annual conference on Friday, October 26, at
Rider University. Science and mathematics K-12 educators from
22 school districts participated in “Big Idea Modules”
focusing on such topics as From the Big Bang to Our Solar
System, Human Impacts on Living Systems and the Making Sense
of Data.
Among the highlights of the day was a keynote address presented
by Dr. Gordon Sherman, executive director of The Newgrange School
and Education Center in Hamilton, N.J. who spoke on Teaching Tomorrow’s
Scientists Today: Teach the Brain First, and the presentation
of the Isaac Newton Award for Vision and Leadership in Science
and Mathematics Education to Anne Catena, director of special
projects at Princeton University’s Program in Teacher Preparation.
The award is presented to individuals and organizations that capture
the spirit of Newton’s insatiable drive to explain physical
phenomena through their leadership and hard work to advance science
and mathematics education. “Anne has worked tirelessly and
strategically for the last 14 years to provide opportunities for
teachers of science and mathematics in the region,” said
Dr. Kathleen Browne, Rider’s CONNECT-ED project director.
“She is most deserving of this award.
“The value of this professional development approach
is becoming more evident from recent national reports and
initiatives. We are excited to work with extremely talented
teachers and content supervisors to offer these timely opportunities.”
