Westminster Presents Two Choral Programs on November 11
Choral music lovers will have the opportunity to hear a wide
range of repertoire on Sunday, November 11, when two of Westminster’s
eight choirs present fall concerts. The Westminster Choir will
present a program entitled “The Sun Is Daily New and Old”
at 3 p.m., and the Westminster Jubilee Singers will present a
concert entitled “We Give Thanks” at 7 p.m. Both concerts
will take place in Bristol Chapel.
Renowned as one of the world’s leading choral ensembles,
the Westminster Choir will perform works that reflect the musical
vision of Joe Miller, who is in his second year as its conductor.
The concert takes its title from Alfred Janson’s setting
of Shakespeare’s Sonnet No.76, which concludes,
“For as the sun is daily new and old; So is my love still
telling what is told.” Embarking on a tonal journey of new
and old works, the ensemble will perform a diverse array of texts
and harmonies that remind the listener to look to the future but
stay connected to the past. In addition to the Janson work, the
program will include settings of Shakespeare’s texts by
contemporary composers Matthew Harris and Jaakko Mäntyjärvi.
The choir will also perform William Byrd’s Haec dies,
Jonathan Quick’s Loch Lomond and three songs by
Johannes Brahms.
Conducted and accompanied by J. Donald Dumpson, the Westminster
Jubilee Singers is a multicultural, multiracial and interdenominational
choral ensemble. The choir’s repertoire focuses on music
from the African-American tradition. The Thanksgiving-themed program
will include music that will inspire the audience to give thanks
for the gifts of themselves, their family and their friends. On
December 13, the ensemble is the opening act for a concert by
Grammy Award-winning gospel artist CeCe Winans at the New Jersey
Performing Arts Center in Newark.
Tickets for the Westminster choral performances on November 11
are $15 for adults and $10 for students and seniors. Rider students,
faculty and staff receive one free ticket with valid Rider ID.
