Rider University Art Exhibit of New Jersey artist Peter Stroud’s Paintings, from September 20 to October 21

The Rider University Art Gallery exhibit entitled “Paintings: 1970 to 2007” by Peter Stroud opened on Thursday, September 20 and will continue through Sunday, October 21. The Art Gallery is located in the Bart Luedeke Center on the Lawrenceville campus and admission is free. The exhibit will focus on both the abstract constructivist images and pure abstract color-field images created by this important New Jersey artist and educator.

Rider University Art Gallery Jazz Concert on October 11

The first of four Rider University Art Gallery Concerts by Westminster Conservatory faculty this season will take place at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 11, in the Rider University Art Gallery in the Bart Luedeke Center on the Lawrenceville campus. The recital, which is open to the public without charge, features jazz pianist Mike Green, a member of the Westminster Conservatory faculty. The program will include jazz standards as well as improvisation. Green has been an active musician for more than 20 years in New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania. His musical expertise includes not only jazz piano but also jazz and classical trumpet, composition and arrangements.

Westminster Conservatory at Nassau Recital on October 18

There will be a Westminster Conservatory at Nassau recital on Thursday, October 18, at 12:15 p.m. in the Niles Chapel of Nassau Presbyterian Church at 61 Nassau Street in Princeton.
This half-hour lunchtime recital is free and open to the public and will feature Kenneth Ellison, clarinet; Marjorie Selden, viola; and Donald Dolan, piano.

Westminster Symphonic Choir to Perform with the Cleveland Orchestra on October 18

The Westminster Symphonic Choir will perform Mahler’s Symphony No. 2 The Resurrection on Thursday, October 18, at 8 p.m. at Carnegie Hall, Stern Auditorium/Perelman Stage, 57th Street and 7th Avenue, New York City. The conductor is Franz Welser-Möst, with soloists Malin Hartelius, soprano, and Bernarda Fink, mezzo-soprano. Westminster Conservatory String Department Recital on October 20

The Westminster Conservatory String Department will present a recital on Saturday, October 20, at 3 p.m. in Bristol Chapel on the Westminster campus. The repertoire includes Beethoven’s String Quartet, Op. 18, No. 4 in C Minor; Schubert’s Quintet, Op. 163 in C Major; and Brahms’s Sextet, Op. 36 in G Major. The performers will be Dezheng David Ping and Elizabeth Guerriero, violin; Marjorie Selden and Alexander Izotov, viola; and Carol Redfield Vizzini and Melissa Burton Anderson, violoncello. On Sunday, October 21, at 3 p.m., members of the Westminster Conservatory Wind Department will present a recital in Bristol Chapel on the Westminster campus. Lecture Entitled “The Nude in Modernism: Nadelman, Arp and Others” on October 24

A lecture series entitled “Naked Facts: The Nude in 19th and 20th Century Art” is being presented by the studio program in art in the Fine Arts Department on Wednesdays at 7 p.m. in the Rider University Art Gallery in the Bart Luedeke Center on the Lawrenceville campus. The series is free and open to the public. The first lecture on October 24 is entitled “The Nude in Modernism: Nadelman, Arp and Others” and is being presented by Lance Esplund, chief art critic. , The New York Sun and writer on art for Yale Review, Modern Painters and Harper’s. Westminster Chapel Choir Performing on October 27 For Family Weekend

The Westminster Chapel Choir, conducted by Sun Min Lee and Ronnie Oliver, will be performing a Family Weekend Celebration concert on Saturday, October 27 at 7:30 p.m. in the Princeton Regional Schools Performing Arts Center at Princeton High School. Filled with works by Finzi, Haydn, Whitacre, Dello Joio and many others, this concert marks the first performance this year by the freshman class. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students/seniors and may be purchased only at the door on the night of the performance. Students, faculty and staff receive one free ticket with a valid Rider ID and can also only be obtained at the door. Seating is limited.

Westminster Community Orchestra, Westminster Schola Cantorum and the Keystone State Boychoir Performing October 28

The Westminster Community Orchestra, conducted by Ruth Ochs; Westminster Schola Cantorum, conducted by James Jordan; and the Keystone State Boychoir, conducted by Steven M. Fisher, with soloist Charles Walker, tenor, will present a concert entitled “Russian Pathos and the Miracles of Saint Nicolas” on Sunday, October 28, at 3 p.m. in Richardson Auditorium in Alexander Hall at Princeton University. The repertoire consists of: Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5, Britten’s Saint Nicolas, and the world premiere of Mäntyjärvi’s Jubilate Deo for brass and choir. Performing will be Danielle Sinclair, soprano; Denise Mihalik, mezzo-soprano; Timothy Urban, baritone and Kathy Shanklin, piano. Westminster Kantorei Will Present “Miracolo D’Amore!” Concert on October 28

Westminster Kantorei, conducted by Andrew Megill, will present its first concert of the 2007-2008 season entitled “Miracolo D’Amore!” on Sunday, October 28, at 4 p.m. at Christ Church United Methodist, Park Avenue & 60th Street in New York City. Claudio Monteverdi’s music vibrates with passion and life. The concert will include many of his secular masterpieces, which sparked a revolution in music, introducing the new ideal of drama, color and contrast. The repertoire will include madrigals (including Lagrime al sepolcro d’amante, a cycle of six madrigals lamenting the death of his foster-daughter) and excerpts from his groundbreaking operas Orfeo and The Coronation of Poppea. Westminster Kantorei will be accompanied by theorbo, organ and a violin band from the Mannes School of Music, Nancy Wilson, director. Admission is $15 for adults and $10 for students and seniors.
