Rider University Art Exhibit of New Jersey artist Peter Stroud’s Paintings, from September 20 to October 21

The Rider University Art Gallery will present an exhibit entitled “Paintings: 1970 to 2007” by Peter Stroud from Thursday, September 20, to Sunday, October 21. The opening reception will be held on Thursday, September 20, from 5 to 7 p.m. An artist’s talk will be held on Thursday, September 27, at 7 p.m. The Art Gallery is located in the Bart Luedeke Center on the Lawrenceville campus and admission is free. The exhibit will focus on both the abstract constructivist images and pure abstract color-field images created by this important New Jersey artist and educator.

Westminster Faculty Recital by Ken Cowan on September 26

Organist Ken Cowan and violinist Lisa Shihoten will perform works by Vierne and Liszt’s Mephisto Waltz No. 1 arranged by Ken Cowan; works for violin and organ by Tommaso Antonio Vitali (Chaconne in G minor), and Naji Hakim (Caprice); and works for organ, violin and voice by Sigfrid Karg-Elert (Fugue, Canzone and Epilog, op. 85, No. 3) on Wednesday, September 26, at 7:30 p.m. in Bristol Chapel on the Westminster campus. Fuma Sacra to Perform on September 28

Fuma Sacra, conducted by Andrew Megill, will present a concert on Friday, September 28, at 8 p.m. in Bristol Chapel on the Westminster campus. Westminster Conservatory Kaleidoscope Chamber Series Concert on September 30

Westminster Conservatory’s Kaleidoscope Chamber Series presents its first concert of the season on Sunday, September 30, at 3 p.m. in Gill Memorial Chapel on the Lawrenceville campus. The recital is entitled Acoustic Mélange and will be presented by Jill Crawford, flute; Kenneth Ellison, clarinet; Marjorie Selden, viola; and Donald Dolan, piano. They will perform music of Clarke, Uhl, Reinecke and Arnold. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students and seniors and are available by calling the Westminster box office at 609-921-2663. Westminster Symphonic Choir to Perform with the Lucerne Festival Orchestra at Carnegie Hall on October 3, 4

The Westminster Symphonic Choir will be performing Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 with the Lucerne Festival Orchestra, conducted by David Robertson, at the opening night gala of Carnegie Hall’s 117th season on Wednesday, October 3, at 7 p.m. and Thursday, October 4, at 8 p.m. The program on October 3 will also include Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 4 with pianist Murray Perahia. The soloists are Melanie Diener, soprano; Anna Larsson, contralto, Jonas Kaufmann, tenor; and Reinhard Hagen, bass. The performance will be held in the Stern Auditorium/Perelman Stage at Carnegie Hall, 57th Street and Seventh Avenue in New York City. For tickets call 212-247-7800.


Women of the Westminster Choir to Perform with the Lucerne Festival Orchestra on October 6

The women of the Westminster Choir will perform Mahler’s Symphony No. 3 with the Lucerne Festival Orchestra and The American Boychoir on Saturday, October 6, at 8 p.m. in Stern Auditorium/Perelman Stage at Carnegie Hall. The soloist is contralto Anna Larsson and the conductor, Pierre Boulez. Chiu-Ling Lin to Present a Westminster Faculty Recital Entitled “West Meets East” on October 7

Pianist Chiu-Ling Lin will present a recital on Sunday, October 7, at 3 p.m. in Bristol Chapel on the Westminster campus. She will be joined by pianist Chiu-Tze Lin, and the repertoire includes Mendelssohn’s Fantasy in F-sharp Minor, op. 28, Tan Dun’s Memories in Watercolor, Wang Jian Zhong’s Birds Pay Tribute to Phoenix, Albéniz’ Iberia, Mozart’s Sonata in C, K. 521 and Liszt’s Sonetto 104 del Petrarca, S. 161, No. 5 and Tarantella. Rider Art Gallery Concert on October 11

There will be a Rider University Art Gallery concert featuring Westminster Conservatory faculty members on Thursday, October 11, at 7:30 p.m. The program and performers will be announced. The Rider Univeristy Art Gallery is located in the Bart Luedeke Center on the Lawrenceville campus. Admission is free.

Concert by Westminster Williamson Voices “The Sounds of Serenity and Contemplation” on October 14

Westminster Williamson Voices, conducted by James Jordan, will perform their first concert of the new season on Sunday, October 14, at 3 p.m. in Bristol Chapel on the Westminster campus. The program includes works from the choral literature that invite contemplation through both serenity and sound. The program begins with an Ode to Music by Hugo Distler. The O Vos Omnes of Blake Henson and the Ubi Caritas of Duruflé approach the entrance of serenity through the doors of spirituality. Innisfree and The Fiddler of Dooney by Gerald Custer use the poetry of Yeats to transport the listener to places where serenity and quiet abound. The program features Vaughan Williams’ Serenade to Music, and settings of Sure on This Shining Night by American composers Samuel Barber and Morten Lauridsen. The program closes with two pieces of musical “thanksgiving:” I Thank you for the Amazing Day by Eric Whitacre and the world premiere of Gerald Custer’s I Am in Need of Music.
