GEMS Say It All for Department's New Name
Much can be connoted in a name. For the former Department
of Geological and Marine Sciences at Rider University, its name
change to the Department of Geological, Environmental, and Marine
Sciences says it all – GEMS.
“The name change to GEMS recognizes – and ultimately
promotes – the diversity of earth science-related and degree-granting
programs administered by the department,” said Dr. Richard
Alexander, department chair and professor.
The environmental sciences major, formed in 1999, is now the
second largest of the six degree-granting programs the department
offers, so it seemed rational to add it to the department’s
name. The marine sciences major remains the largest major.
Three of the degree programs – geosciences, environmental
sciences and marine sciences – prepare students for either
immediate employment or continuation in graduate school to pursue
a M.S. or Ph.D. in a science specialty.
The other three programs – marine ecological emphasis,
environmental emphasis and integrated science – are intended
primarily to prepare education majors for teaching sciences in
elementary or secondary schools. The integrated science major,
approved in December 2005, is designed for specialization by middle
school science and math teachers.
These programs are more streamlined so they can be completed
along with the curricular core and major requirements of the School
of Education in four years.
