English Professor Previews
New Book at Westminster
 |
Dr. Jack Sullivan |
Dr. Jack Sullivan, professor of
English and director of Rider’s American Studies Program,
will present a lecture about his new book, “Hitchcock’s
Music,” on Wednesday, November 15 from 7 to 8 p.m. in Talbott
Library’s room L1 on the Westminster campus.
Widely known in literary circles for his books on musical culture
and the ghost story as a literary form, Sullivan offers new insight
into Alfred Hitchcock, whom many regard as the master of the suspense
film. Sullivan’s forthcoming book fully explores the essential
role music played in Hitchcock’s movies, and how Hitchcock
ultimately changed how we think about the music of film.
His presentation will include clips from Hitchcock’s films
to illustrate how Hitchcock used music to influence the atmosphere,
characterization, and even the storylines of his films. He will
also explore the director’s relationships with various composers,
especially Bernard Herrmann, and tell the stories behind Hitchcock’s
musical decisions.
The program is open to the public, and books will be available
for purchase in advance of the official December 1 publication
date.
