Celebrating its 20th season, the College of Continuing Studies will offer a "menu" of topics designed to provide stimulating "food for thought" during its fall 2005 Lunch Box Lecture Series.

The lectures will take place on four Wednesdays - October 12, 26, November 2, and November 9 in the Bart Luedeke Center (BLC) Theater from noon to 1 p.m. The series is free and open to the public. All in attendance are invited to bring a lunch; coffee and tea will be provided.

“We are celebrating 20 years of a perfect marriage since we have had excellent faculty presentations and outstanding audiences,” said Karen Crowell, assistant dean of the College of Continuing Studies. “The Lunch Box has provided a venue to invite the surrounding community to our campus. As a result, many of the attendees have audited classes and attended other University events."

  • On October 12, Jerry Rife, professor of fine arts, will open the series with "Creativity, Consciousness and the Senses: Improvisation as Spontaneous Musical Creation." Rife will explore the creative process of improvising musicians, examine the historical role of improvisation and the states of mental concentration that produce inspired creation.
  • "The Battle of the Multimillionaires: The 2005 New Jersey Governor's Race," is the topic on October 26. Dr. David Rebovich, associate professor of political science and managing director of the Rider University Institute for New Jersey Politics, will examine various issues the candidates will confront, the general assembly races, and offer predictions about who the winners and losers will be on Election Day.
  • On November 2, Drs. Margaret Cusak, associate professor of voice; J.J. Penna associate professor of piano; and Robert Annis, dean of Westminster Choir College, will present "A Recital of American Song. " Westminster faculty will treat their audience to the songs of Samuel Barber, Joel Kander as well as Ned Rorem's epic, Ariel, based on the poems of Sylvia Plath.
  • The series will conclude November 9 with the lecture, "The News from the Israeli Palestinian Front: Towards the Third Intifada." Dr. Jonathan Mendilow, professor of political science will give an update on the Middle East conflict.
