Rider students are leading an effort to educate
their peers about issues surrounding the consumption of drugs
and alcohol during its Alcohol Responsibility Week, which began
Monday, September 26 and runs through Friday, September 30.
A broad spectrum of thought-provoking events will be led by PHOCUS
(Peer Health on Campus Unites Students), a new student peer health
educator group on campus; Greek Life, Residence Life office, Counseling
Services and other campus groups. "We decided to change the name
of Alcohol Awareness Week to Alcohol Responsibility Week because
we really want to focus on educating and helping other students
make responsible choices for themselves," said Theresa
Gregory, a sophomore marketing/advertising major and
a PHOCUS member.
Residence halls will host programs throughout the week. Students can stop by Daly's from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Monday to pick up information about alcohol and drug-related issues. Free cups, magnets, and brochures will be available. Those who come to Daly's will also be encouraged to sign a pledge to be responsible for themselves and their friends.
On Wednesday, September 28, LASO (Latin American Student Organization)
will host Mocktails and Dinner in the Fireside Lounge of the Bart
Luedeke Center (BLC) from 6 to 8 p.m. Following dinner, a "Mock
Pub Night" with food and mocktails will take place in the Pub
from 8 to 10 p.m. During this time, PHOCUS members will perform
skits regarding alcohol consumption, particularly on drinking
and driving. The evening will conclude with the discussion, "Greek
101: Hazing Prevention," at 10 p.m. in the BLC Theater. Students
21 years and older will also have an opportunity to gain further
insight into various alcohol and substance abuse-related issues
Thursday, September 29 by playing alcohol awareness trivia games
at the Pub from 9 to 11 p.m. T-shirts will be presented to the
winners.
"The key is to promote healthy lifestyles," said Gregory. "What better way to do this but at the start of the academic year."
