David Feige, a public defender, legal commentator and writer, will be presented Rider University's ninth annual Law and Justice Distinguished Achievement Award on Thursday, October 28 at 11:30 a.m. in the Fireside Lounge of the Bart Luedeke Center (BLC).

Feige's acceptance address will be given at a luncheon in his honor to which the public is invited. His presentation is titled, "Eyewitness Identification: Science in the Courtroom." During his talk, he will discuss how social science works in the courtroom based on his personal experiences with the criminal justice system.

"Each year, the Law and Justice Committee recognizes the achievements of an individual or organization whose efforts have made a meaningful contribution either to the state or national legal environment," said Dr. Pamela Brown, professor of communication and director of the Law and Justice program. "The committee was impressed by Mr. Feige's commitment to ensuring that the justice system works effectively for everyone."

Until recently, Feige served as the Trial Chief of an innovative public defender office in the South Bronx known as The Bronx Defenders. Feige is a member of the National Criminal Defense College, and has taught for the National Institute for Trial Advocacy, and at law schools and public defender offices across the country. In 2002, he was awarded the National Legal Aid and Defender Association's Reginald Heber Smith Award.

Feige's bylines have appeared in The New York Times, and the publications, Slate and Legal Affairs. A familiar face on Court TV, he can also be heard on National Public Radio and its affiliate WNYC commenting on criminal justice. In 2004, Feige was recipient of a Soros Media Justice Fellowship. He is currently working on a book tentatively titled, Indefensible.

Anyone who is interested in attending Feige's address should RSVP to Dr. Brown at (609) 896-5107 or (609) 896-5209.
