Rider’s Student Education Association (SEA) captured the spirit of the season, brightening the lives of a recent Rider graduate and her students just in time for the holidays. More than 75 volunteers from the School of Education recently collected approximately $1,000 worth of school supplies to donate to Lynnette Dortrait’s class at Liberty Academy Charter School in Jersey City, N.J. More


Recently, Gina Grosso had a chance to get up close and personal with music sensations Paramour, Brandy, Chris Brown, Jesse McCartney and Rhianna, filming interviews of the top stars backstage at Z100’s Jingle Ball at Madison Square Garden. The sophomore Communication major jokes that she spends most of her time inside the Rider University Network studio, but Grosso knows she is developing skills that will help her broadcasting career. “That’s the entire reason why I came here, because I was able to get hands-on experience right from the beginning,” she explained. Dr. Tamar Jacobson, chair of the Department of Teacher Education and Director of the Early Childhood Program, keeps a collection of dolls in her Memorial Hall office. One has a pouting face, another has a toothy grin. No one doll is the same, but all the dolls are part of a family and serve the same purpose. Last month, Jacobson presented the concept “Dolls as a Window to the Curriculum” at the Early Childhood Education Summit at The Penn Stater Conference Center Hotel in State College, Pa. More

John Lestino ’82 always wants to know how he can help. He’s helped coach tennis to campers at the YMCA, helped a school for orphaned boys grow its child development offerings, and for the past 20 years, has helped the Edgewater Park, N.J., School District teach its students in a way best tailored to suit their respective abilities. Now, the National Association of School Psychologists has decided it’s time to help Lestino, naming him the National School Psychologist of the Year. More

    Debbie Stasolla, associate vice president for Planning, and Dr. Pearlie-Mae Peters, professor of English, have been named the recipients of the Fall 2008 Mazzotti Awards. The Mazzotti Awards offer opportunities for women faculty and staff members to attend leadership development programs that will benefit the Rider community and assist recipients in their professional advancement.

  • Rider’s EOP Turns 40
    Commemorating a landmark year for access to learning, Rider University’s Educational Opportunity Program held a special EOP 40th Anniversary and Holiday Celebration in the Princeton Room of the newly renovated Daly’s Dining Hall on Wednesday, December 10. About 30 people, including EOP staff, students and advisory board members, were on hand to honor the state-sponsored program that enables low-income New Jersey residents to attend college.

  • New Recordings Bring Westminster Sounds to the World
  • Just in time for the holidays, Westminster Choir College is offering two new recordings featuring a wide array of music sure to please any music lover. A Westminster Christmas II features music of the season performed by the Westminster Choir, the Westminster Concert Bell Choir and Ken Cowan, assistant professor of Organ at Westminster. The Westminster Concert Bell Choir is also featured in the 30th Anniversary Collection, which was released this summer to commemorate three decades of the Westminster Concert Bell Choir. Both recordings are available through Westminster’s online store at www.westminsterchoircollege.org or through most major download sites.

  • A Reel Honor: Student Recognized for Gender, Film Studies Paper
  • Meg Holland, a student in Rider’s College of Continuing Studies, recently presented a paper at the Mid-Atlantic Popular/American Culture Association conference, where she received the Daniel Walden Student Paper Competition award for best undergraduate work. Holland, a senior Liberal Studies major from Mount Holly, N.J., wrote Reel Silence: The Female Voice in Patriarchal Law as Represented in ‘A Question of Silence’ and ‘The Accused’ for a class last fall.

  • Friendship is a Two-Way Street in Rider Program
    Dr. Diane Casale-Giannola says that while her Teacher Education students have much to offer their visitors in the Rider Friendships program, their guests do not arrive for their monthly visits in Memorial Hall with nothing in return. Giannola watches with delight as their “friends” – young adults with varied developmental disabilities – regale the Rider undergraduates with lessons of their own, such as tales of travel to exotic locales around the earth, showing them that friendship is a two-way street.
