As the clock ticks past 9:10 a.m. in Lawrenceville, N.J., eight Rider University students wonder what a similar group of learners is thinking 6,000 miles away in Najaf, Iraq, at the same time. On either side of an intercontinental videoconferencing connection, which is just moments from being established, there is nervous but excited anticipation among the students. What will be discussed? Will we find common ground? More


During the week, Chelsea Hinkle excels as a junior Accounting and Finance dual major, but when Friday afternoon rolls around, it’s time for her to lace up her skates. When Hinkle hits the rink, she jumps and spins like any of the most famous figure skaters, but Hinkle doesn’t compete on the ice. A competitive roller figure skater, Hinkle practices for long hours, but her dedication finally paid off when she qualified to compete in the World Championship in Freiburg, Germany in November. More

Dr. Adriano Duque, director of External Honors and assistant professor of Spanish at Rider, is currently conducting research in Syria as part of the Traditional Fulbright Scholar Program. Duque is the 17th Rider faculty member to receive a Fulbright. His research, entitled Hagiography and Social Norms: Simeon Metaphrastes and the Islamic Legend of St. John the Baptist in 10th Century Greater Syria will focus on Christian-Muslim relations in the Middle East.   • Rogers Assumes New Role as Deputy Commissioner
    Wanda Jones Rogers ’79 recently became the deputy commissioner of the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Financial Management Service bureau, making her the first African-American and just the second woman to hold this position. Rogers, who has held a number of executive positions both within the bureau and at the Treasury’s Departmental Offices during her 29-year career with the Department, said she often reflects upon her undergraduate experience at Rider as a Business Education major.
  • Goldstein Lecture Will Examine Unintended Bias
    Rider University will host the third annual Marvin W. Goldstein Lecture on Prejudice Reduction on October 28 at 7 p.m. in the Bart Luedeke Center Theater. This year’s lecture will feature Samuel Gaertner, Ph.D., a professor of Psychology at the University of Delaware, who will speak on Prejudice Among the Well Intentioned. The series honors the 38-year career of Goldstein, a member of Rider’s Department of Psychology and the co-director of The Julius and Dorothy Koppelman Holocaust and Genocide Resource Center at Rider.
  • Pieces Come Together For Autism Speaks
    Pieces of the puzzle from various corners of Rider University community came together to make the 10th annual Central New Jersey Walk Now for Autism Speaks event a success on October 11 at Mercer County Community College in West Windsor. Students and faculty members formed a School of Education Team, and were joined by entries from the Department of Psychology and more than 100 members of Rider’s Greek Life community to participate in the benefit for Autism Speaks.
  • War Child ‘Raps’ Up Unity Days
    Emmanuel Jal says that the African way of writing history is to tell stories. “I’m just doing it in a musical way,” explained the international hip-hop star, who was at Rider’s Bart Luedeke Center Theater on Monday, October 19, to talk about his experiences as a child soldier in Sudan. Jal’s keynote address was the stirring culmination of the University’s Unity Days 2009 celebration.
    • Westminster Conservatory Celebrates 40 Years with Benefit Concert
    • Westminster Conservatory, the community music school of Rider University’s Westminster College of the Arts, will kick off its 40th anniversary year with a benefit concert and reception in the Bart Luedeke Center Theater on Sunday, November 1, at 3 p.m. The afternoon will also include a silent auction of music- and arts-related items. The program will feature members of the Conservatory faculty performing works by Chopin, Arnold, Schocker, Hummel, Copland, Altman and others, as well as music theater and jazz selections.
    • Alumni Reception at NJEA Convention
    • All Rider alumni attending the New Jersey Education Association (NJEA) Convention in Atlantic City in November are invited to attend the Alumni Reception at the Sheraton Atlantic City Convention Center Hotel, in Pearl Ballroom 1, on Thursday, November 5, from 1:30 to 3 p.m. The Sheraton is located adjacent to the main entrance of the Atlantic City Convention Center. There is no charge to attend the event.
