
Senior Radio and Television Communications major Patty Wittenburg '10 will become the first Rider student ever to have a film screened at the world-famous Cannes International Film Festival, beginning May 13. The 29-minute documentary, Stills of the Movement: The Civil Rights Photojournalism of Flip Schulke, which Wittenburg produced along with professor Shawn Kildea, is narrated by veteran actor John Amos and chronicles the career of the legendary lensman, who died last May at age 77.

Inside the laboratories of the second floor of the Science and Technology Building, two students are conducting research, the sort that could someday affect how cancer is treated and how the United States handles bioterrorism scares. Recently, the students, Biology majors Daniel Graham '11 and Megan Kozlowski '11, received American Society for Microbiology Undergraduate Research Fellowships, an award that is reserved for the nation’s best and brightest rising young scientists, and comes with a generous $5,000 stipend to support research in microbiology. Robbie Clipper Sethi’s writing has seen her weave American culture into that of India, using experiences and observations from her own narrative to help shape her fiction. Sethi, a professor of English, will now be able to meld her American perspectives with those of students at the Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) in Hyderabad, India, through the Fulbright-Nehru Fellowship she was awarded in April. Through the program, Sethi will teach creative writing to IIIT students at the central India campus for the fall semester. More
Dr. Jack Sullivan, professor of English and American Studies, appears on documentary special features for the following new Alfred Hitchcock DVDs: Rebecca (newly released by MGM), Vertigo (Universal), Rear Window (Universal) and Psycho (Universal). In addition, the paperback version of Sullivan’s book Hitchcock’s Music was cited as one of the Best Paperbacks of the Year by the London Financial Times.

Graduating Seniors Praised for Academic, Extracurricular Success

Three graduating seniors were honored with the President’s Award for their exemplary record of academic performance, extracurricular achievement and service to the University, capping the Rider University Awards Banquet on May 2 in the BLC Cavalla Room. The President’s Awards were among a total of 68 honors presented at the annual awards ceremony. This year’s recipients are Music Education major Jonathan Slawson '09, Journalism major Danielle Phillips '09 and Marine Sciences and Biology dual major Michael Ciaramella '09.
Model U.N. Team Named Outstanding Delegation 
Rider’s Model United Nations Team received two top honors at the conclusion of the National Model United Nations Conference, held from April 5 to 9 inside the U.N. headquarters in New York City. Representing Lebanon, the Rider team earned the prestigious Outstanding Delegation award, which is the highest distinction a team can receive. The Rider entry competed against 300 delegations from national and international universities, and also received Outstanding Position Paper recognition for the overall quality of the nine papers submitted by the team.
Scholarship Luncheon Connects Friends

Every one of the hundreds of members of the Rider community who donates to the University scholarship fund certainly has his or her own motivation for doing so. And while their reasons for philanthropy vary with each individual, the dividend is always the same – providing a Rider student with an opportunity to succeed. The beneficiaries of this generosity had the opportunity to meet and thank the very people who provide the funds for their scholarships at the Fourth Annual Scholarship and Stewardship Luncheon in the BLC Cavalla Room on April 30.
Naar’s Work Purchased for Permanent Vassar Collection
Harry I. Naar’s drawing Tangled View was selected for purchase through the American Academy of Arts and Letters’ Hassam, Speicher, Betts and Symons Fund and has been accepted into the permanent collection of the Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center of Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. The black-and-white ink drawing was one of four works Naar was invited to display at the Academy’s Invitational Exhibition of Visual Arts this spring. Only 30 artists from across the United States were asked to participate in the prestigious exhibit.

Students Assist DHSS in Prenatal Care Research

Currently, New Jersey’s Department of Health and Senior Services (DHSS) runs three prenatal care programs for residents in Trenton, Newark and New Brunswick as part of a pilot program. If successful, women could see more clinics popping up across the state. Of course, plenty of research is needed to determine the effectiveness and need for a program before deciding to expand. Recently, students from Rider University’s College of Business Administration investigated the effects of prenatal care to assist the Department of Health and Senior Services.
Heather Chojnacki Named Student Ambassador by Embassy of Spain

“Think big!” That’s the advice Dr. Linda Materna, director of the Center for International Education, gave Heather Chojnacki ’11 who hopes to pursue a career in diplomatic relations. So far, the sophomore Spanish and Global and Multinational Studies dual major is following Materna’s advice. Chojnacki, who has studied Spanish for six years, was recently named Spanish Student Ambassador by the Trade Commission of the Embassy of Spain for the upcoming academic year after being nominated by Materna for the position.
