Dr. Hess is the author of the books Big Wheel at the Cracker Factory, Hip Hop in America: A Regional Guide, Is Hip Hop Dead?, and Icons of Hip Hop.
I teach AMS 309: Hip Hop and American Studies, AMS 200: Intro to American Studies, AMS 210: Growing Up American, and a special topics course, AMS 214: Special Topics, Kurt Vonnegut's America. As the English Department's specialist in creative nonfiction my primary focus is memoir and autobiography, but I have published several books and articles on American hip hop, and I am currently bringing my two specializations together as I co-author a biography of the rap star Ol' Dirty Bastard. The book is due in 2014 from HarperCollins.
