Flora Newberry received her Bachelor of Music from the Juilliard School in Trumpet Performance in 1987, and also attended the Jazz Studies program at William Paterson College. She was principal trumpet in the Orquesta Sinfonica de la Universidad de Guanajuato from 1988-89 and has been a member of many ensembles of various styles, such as the Kit McClure Big Band, the Washington Cornett and Sackbut Ensemble and I Virtuosi del Seicento. She currently teaches trumpet for Rider University and the Westminster Conservatory and freelances in the Trenton-Princeton area. She first encountered Hovhaness's music when she performed his Prayer of Saint Gregory in high school, and has been a fan ever since.
