Activities:

  • A versatile musician, Dr. Steven has composed, arranged, conducted, and produced in a broad spectrum of genres, including folk, jazz, classical and computer music.  He has received many commissions from major artists and organizations and his compositions have been performed in prestigious international festivals and venues throughout the world. 
  • Dr. Steven’s honors and awards include Phi Kappa Phi National Honor Society; the Jules-Léger (Governor-General’s) Prize for Chamber Music; and the JUNO Award for “Best Classical Composition” from the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences.
  • In addition to his many recordings and published compositions, his recent publications include articles on the widely respected SUNY Assessment Initiative.
  • His professional and community leadership has been wide-ranging and varied.  He has served on numerous professional juries such as the Shanghai International Radio Festival and chaired the International Jury of the CBC Radio National Competition for Young Composers.  He has consulted for the National Sciences and Engineering Council of Canada and the Open Learning Agency of British Columbia and served on the Advisory Committee on Academic Programs of the South Carolina Commission on Higher Education and the Board of Directors and Executive Committee of the Lowcountry Graduate Center in Charleston, as well as the New York State Education Department Group on Quality Assurance in Higher Education.  He has been the recipient of the President’s Award for Outstanding Community Service from the Tri-County Counseling Association of Charleston and a volunteer with Habitat for Humanity.
