Global Health Seminar
Jon Shaffer, Community Engagement Coordinator from Partners In Health, will speak on Global Health Equity on Friday, February 22, at 1:30 p.m. in Science Hall, Room 102.
Partners In Health is dedicated to the idea that "health is a human right." The organization advocates for, and implements, a tremendous variety of health programs in the poorest parts of the world, especially Haiti, Peru, and sub-Saharan Africa. The founding of PIH, by Dr. Paul Farmer and others, most notably Ophelia Dahl (daughter of author Roald Dahl) and Jim Yong Kim, current president of the World Bank, was popularized in Tracy Kidder's Mountains Beyond Mountains. Mr. Shaffer will discuss the history of Partners In Health and its current efforts in effecting change.
As Community Engagement Coordinator for Partners In Health, Mr. Shaffer will focus especially on opportunities for students and others to join the movement for global health equity.
