    A Message from the Chair

    Dear Alumni and Friends,

This edition of Stay Connected brings you news about our faculty, alumni, students and our program. As you can tell by reading this issue, we have a lot of news to share. Here are  a few highlights of what you will read about:

Rankings from the U.S. News & World Report continue to recognize the high quality of our programs. In its annual “America’s Best Colleges” issue for 2012, Rider was ranked at 21 in the top tier of its Regional Universities – North category, which is a jump of 15 places over last year’s ranking of 36. Go Rider!

Our students continue to be involved in many organizations and competitions and our co-op, internship and full-time placements are at an all-time high. Not only do we provide our students with a strong accounting education, but we have also incorporated those “soft-skills” necessary for success into our program. Be sure to read the two features that discuss how we prepare our students for the professional world.

Our graduates continue to make us proud. They have succeeded in many career paths and this newsletter features four alumni profiles. Howard Cohen,’71, who is chairman of EisnerAmper, LLP and chair of the Accounting Advisory Council, shares how his Rider experience prepared him for success. Matt Block ’06, who took a leave of absence from his firm, interned with the Securities and Exchange Commission in New York and now Matt shares the interesting paths his career has already taken.

Also, read about brothers Steve Gerard ’84 and Neil Gerard ’89 who both credit their success in their respective fields to lessons learned from Rider’s Department of Accounting. Steve is president and founder of TGaS Advisors and Neil is a partner at J.H. Cohn LLP. The Gerards recently donated a generous unrestricted gift to the Accounting department. As a result, five Master of Accountancy (MAcc) students were awarded academic scholarships.

Our success would not be possible without the generous support of our alumni and friends. We sincerely appreciate your ongoing efforts to help us maintain the quality of reputation of our program through being involved with student organizations, guest lecturing in classes, recruiting our students and financial donations. Please contact me at oreillyallen@rider.edu to discuss ways you can help us to continue to improve opportunities for our current students and faculty and to further enhance the reputation of your alma mater.

    Best Regards,
    Marge O’Reilly-Allen

  • Rider Jumps 15 Places in U.S. News & World Report Rankings
U.S. News & World Report has once again placed Rider University in the top tier of its Regional Universities - North category, ranked at 21, which is a jump of 15 places over last year's ranking of 36. In addition to the U.S. News & World Report rankings, The Princeton Review has named Rider among its Best 376 Colleges in the Nation for 2012.
  • One on One with Howard Cohen ’71
Recently, Accounting Society President Iram Khan ’12 had an opportunity to speak with Howard Cohen ’71, chairman of EisnerAmper LLP, about his Rider experience as an Accounting student. Cohen has more than 35 years of experience in the fields of public accounting and consulting. A loyal Rider alumnus, Cohen serves as the chairman of the Department Advisory Council, and is a member of the Executive Advisory Council and Beta Alpha Psi.
  • Alumnus Blends Financial Experience with Law Studies to Improve Accounting Profession
Since he declared himself an Accounting and Finance dual major at Rider, Matthew Block ’06 has been determined to improve the accounting profession and transparency in the financial services industry. In August 2009, Block decided to blend his experience in financial services with a background in law. He enrolled in the part-time evening division of New York Law School as a 2013 J.D. candidate while working full time at Tishman Speyer. Block recently began his third year with a 3.93 GPA – ranked in the top 2 percent of his class – and is a member of the New York Law School Law Review.
  • The Real Deal
  • By the time Rider Accounting students have reached their junior year or the end of the Master of Accountancy program, they are well equipped with accounting methods and techniques. Once on the job, however, students might encounter situations not necessarily taught in a formal classroom setting. Rider's Professional Development Seminar gives co-op students a chance to learn and discuss workplace issues.
