Abstract: Contains papers related to Westminster Choir College founders John Finley and Rhea B. Williamson and the early years of the college. Collection includes correspondence, tour diaries, notes, meeting minutes, photographs, programs, and ledger books.

Biographical Note

John Finley Williamson, founder and conductor of the Westminster Choir, and co-founder and president of Westminster Choir College, was born in Canton, Ohio in 1887. He married Rhea Beatrice Parlette in 1912. He attained prominence as Director of Music at Westminster Presbyterian  Church in Dayton, Ohio where his choir excelled and began to tour nationally as the Dayton Westminster Choir, under the sponsorship of patron Katharine Houk Talbott. As their reputation grew, they performed in Carnegie Hall, Boston’s Symphony Hall, and other major venues and also recorded for RCA Victor.

In 1926, Williamson, along with his wife Rhea, founded Westminster Choir School at the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Dayton, Ohio. In 1929, the choir embarked on a tour of Europe, also sponsored by Katharine Houk Talbott. Also in 1929, the school left the church to become affiliated with Ithaca Conservatory in Ithaca, NY; the curriculum expanded from a three to a four year degree program.  Due to the efforts of Charles R. Erdman, a prominent Presbyterian, the school moved again and settled permanently in Princeton, NJ in 1932, taking advantage of its close proximity to both New York and Philadelphia.

In 1934, the choir embarked on its second European tour which included a stop in the Soviet Union where a performance of the choir was broadcast back to the United States. 1934 also saw the dedication of the Princeton campus, a gift of Sophia Strong Taylor, and authorization to grant the degree Master of Music. The name was changed to Westminster Choir College in 1938. The college received accreditation from the State of New Jersey in 1939 and began to build a national reputation for excellence in choral and sacred music.  During the following decades, the choir toured throughout the United States, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia, and was often heard on the radio.  They performed frequently with the New York Philharmonic, the Philadelphia Orchestra, and other prominent orchestras, and with conductors including John Barbirolli, Leopold Stokowski, Arturo Toscanini, Artur Rodzinski, Bruno Walter, and Eugene Ormandy.

Dr. and Mrs. Williamson retired from the college in 1958. The Williamsons continued to serve on the college’s Board of Trustees, but were uninvolved in its daily operations. Dr. Williamson travelled throughout the U. S. and Asia, teaching and conducting vocal clinics. Institutes in Japan drew more than 16,000 participants. That same year he formed the Westminster Singers, comprised of Westminster alumni, and embarked on a tour of Africa, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State. John Finley Williamson died in April 1964, and Rhea B. Williamson, in May 1967. Their establishment of the college and their untiring work as educators and ambassadors had a profound impact on choral music in the United States and throughout the world.

Scope and Content Note

The collection consists of personal and business correspondence pertaining to John Finley and Rhea B. Williamson and Westminster Choir College in general, including correspondence with composers, music publishers and others. Also included are personal items and biographical information relating to the Williamsons including passports, tour diaries, notebooks, ledgers, and writings and speeches.  There are campus planning documents, press and publicity materials, and Talbott Festival programs, and extensive tour related documentation from the 1920s through the 1960s. Many photographs, particularly tour-related images, were removed from this collection and placed in the photograph collection. This collection reflects much about the Williamsons personally and also the history of the college in its early decades.
