Camp Directors: Marjorie Selden and Laurie Cascante
Grades 8 – 12
Ruth Ochs, Chamber Orchestra Conductor
9:30 AM – 3:30 PM
July 6 – 10
Westminster Strings is a one-week chamber music camp where students participate in a variety of mixed string ensembles coached by Conservatory faculty. Students will also play in Westminster’s Summer Camp Chamber Orchestra conducted by Ruth Ochs. As in previous years, students may be selected to perform a movement of a concerto with the Chamber Orchestra. Students will study repertoire carefully selected to highlight the strengths of each ensemble. Westminster Strings participants will also have the benefit of special workshops and master classes throughout the camp week. The week will conclude with a Friday afternoon concert open to the public.
Students should have a minimum of 3 years private instruction. Students must also demonstrate a level of proficiency in reading music which will allow them to learn music quickly and with some independence. All students – new and returning to this camp – will be asked to take a placement audition. (See Placement Audition below for more information.) All students must be entering grades 8 through 12 in the fall of 2015 and must be currently enrolled in private instruction. Minimum enrollment: 10 students
All students must register first before the audition can be scheduled. Families will be contacted to schedule an audition time with one or both of the camp directors. The purpose of the placement audition is to determine appropriate repertoire for the small ensembles and chamber orchestra. Students interested in being considered for a concerto solo can try out at this time as well. At the audition, students will be asked to play a prepared solo which aptly demonstrates their level of playing. The audition will also include sight reading where they will be asked to play a short music example they have not previously seen. The camp directors reserve the right to determine whether or not a student is ready for this camp based on their audition. If the student is not ready, the deposit can be used towards a different Conservatory camp or can be fully refunded.
For best placement in ensembles, it is important for participants to register early.
Chamber Ensemble Camp will be held on the Westminster Choir College campus in Princeton in Princeton Hall. Directions will be sent in the confirmation packet.
In addition to their instrument, students should bring their music, a pencil, and a mid-morning snack. Lunch will be provided at the campus cafeteria.
