Camp Director: John Paul Velez
Grades 3 – 7
June 27 – July 1
1:30 PM – 5:00 PM

Jazz Piano Camp is a perfect starting point for students who are eager to sound like a jazz pianist at the keyboard.   This camp lays down a foundation of particular skills required of a solo jazz pianist before putting them into an ensemble setting.

In Jazz Piano Camp, the pianists have the opportunity to learn about jazz theory in detail while developing practical skills that they can immediately incorporate into their playing.  Building and then practicing chords, scales and modes will provide students with helpful tools for improvisation. Students will learn to play left hand patterns against a right hand melody, and will pick up a few riffs and jazz influenced rhythms in the process.

Although the emphasis of Jazz Piano Camp is on developing the solo jazz pianist, students will play some duet arrangements of jazz literature to better understand the distinct roles of melody verses accompaniment.  On the final day of camp, families will hear a whole new style of playing from the students as they share their newly learned jazz skills and techniques at the afternoon concert.

Students enrolling in Jazz Piano Camp must have studied privately for a minimum of 2 years and have a solid grasp of rhythmic and melodic dictation and experience playing some scales and chords.  Jazz Piano Camp prepares pianists for ensemble playing which is the emphasis of Jazz Starters Camp.  Pianists enrolled in the Jazz Starters Camp concentrate more on playing advanced chords and learn how to accompany other instruments in a jazz band ensemble.

Jazz Piano Camp will be held on the Westminster Choir College campus in Princeton Hall.

Jazz Piano Camp will meet Monday through Friday from 1:30 – 5:00 PM. On the final day, the students will present a concert for their family and friends (time TBA).  Campers should wear their Conservatory T-shirts!
