Captains' Leadership Program

The Captains’ Leadership Program is a joint effort between the Center for the Development of Leadership Skill and the Rider Athletics Department to bring the captains of all 20 Rider University sports together to discuss the various elements, trials and challenges that captains, as leaders, face on a day-to-day basis. The Captains’ Leadership Seminars are held twice a year a cover topics such as leadership, teamwork, values and ethics.

Captains’ Leadership Program Objectives:

  • Support teams with leadership training for their captains and leaders;
  • Raise the awareness of the environment for today’s athletes at Rider;
  • Foster understanding of all team captains of their responsibilities to their teams, teammates, coaches and Rider University on and off the “field of play”. 
  • Develop a community of captain-leaders at Rider;
  • Strengthen the connection between leadership and winning;
  • Establish shared vision of the captain’s role;
  • Understand the cooperative relationship with coaches & administration;
  • Enhance the entire team’s experience;
  • Drive proactive leadership.

In the Classroom Being a Rider University Student-Athlete Means:

  • Academic performance precedes athletic performance;
  • Always being a proactive student - motivated, engaged, and successful in academics;
  • Being resourceful - utilizing teammates, faculty, staff, and specialists to support academic success;
  • Managing time successfully – knowing daily schedule, setting priorities and managing free time—this is a personal responsibility.

In Competition Being a Rider University Student-Athlete Means:

  • Having mental toughness and keeping your head in the game, goals in mind and having strong, positive response to adversity;
  • Showing good sportsmanship and respect;
  • Proving athletic excellence and having the ambition, passion, drive, and dedication to always excel; 
  • Playing to win and treating each game during every season as if it is your last.

Within the Community Being a Rider University Student-Athlete Means:
