Team Leadership Challenge – The History

Team Leadership Challenge (TLC), developed by the Center for the Development of Leadership Skills (CDLS) in 2005, is an exciting day of intellectually and physically challenging events designed to enhance a student's leadership skills.  The TLC offers students hands-on leadership experiences, a comprehensive understanding of leadership styles and training in interpersonal skills - such as communicating, influencing others, and teamwork.

This Year’s Team Leadership Challenge – “Navigating Your Path to Success”

For the fourth consecutive year, the CDLS has teamed up with Recreational Programs and the Organizational Leadership program to present the TLC!  For the second consecutive year, we are teaming with Greek Life to make the TLC an official Greek Week event!

Whether you are new to TLC or a returning boat builder, we encourage all undergraduate and graduate students to join us and enhance your team leadership skills!  We’ll be offering a variety of personal and team development activities that will culminate in the building of cardboard canoes that will be raced in the Coppola Pool.  It’s an exciting, experiential event that promises to be fun and highly valuable to your leadership development.

Students will register individually, and will indicate if they wish to be placed on a team or if they are already on a team.  Teams may have up to 5 individuals.  The first 100 students to register will have the opportunity to learn valuable leadership skills AND work as a group to build a cardboard canoe!  It promises to be a fun and exciting leadership experience for the students who will participate.

Training Information

Students will attend a two-hour workshop designed to provide leadership training and cardboard canoe building preparation.

This year, two training dates will be scheduled.  It is preferable that team members attend a training session together, so please discuss with your teammates your availability on these dates.

To assure an equal distribution of teams for these sessions, you will indicate which session(s) you are able to attend.  If you are able to attend both sessions, you will be assigned a date and notified of the training session you and your team will attend.

Training dates/times are:

  • Friday, April 19 from 3 – 5 pm, Cavalla Room
  • Sunday, April 21 from 12 – 2 pm, SRC Seminar Room (same day as build/race)

Learning Objectives of the TLC

Students participating in the 2013 Team Leadership Challenge will:

  1. Learn about team development, group dynamics and how to guide a team through difficult circumstances to ensure goal achievement.
  2. Recognize who they are as a leader and how to adapt their leadership style to different situations to increase team effectiveness.
  3. Experience leadership outside of their comfort zone and learn how to positively respond to stressful situations.
  4. Understand how to more effectively communicate with team members and manage conflict.
  5. Apply all knowledge and skills obtained throughout the day to the final challenge as well as life at Rider and beyond.
  6. Network and connect with other student leaders and members of the Rider community.

Individual and Team Registration Information

To register for the Team Leadership Challenge, please click here to access the registration page.

Each student, whether registering as part of a team or as an individual, will register for the event individually. We will not be having a team captain sign up his/her entire team as was done in the past. If you are already part of a team as of the time you are registering, please indicate the name of your team on the registration page (i.e. Alpha Xi Delta, Team Fabulous).

Remember to indicate the training session(s) that you and your team are available to attend.

Students and teams will be registered on a first-come, first-served basis.  After 20 teams have been formed, other students/teams will be placed on a waitlist and contacted if any openings become available.

The last day to register for the TLC is Friday, April 5, 2013.
