Abstract:  Fragrances are an area where emotion and science come together. Whether we know it or not, we are directly interacting with the chemical world every time that we smell.. This seminar will take a scientific perspective and discuss several areas within fragrance chemistry including: The key organic molecules that are the building blocks to fragrance creation. The olfaction process where a human being is a sensitive chemoreceptor. The physical chemistry involved in fragrance “architecture” and the analytical techniques used to understand the fragranced world that we live in. With fragrances, the division between the natural and synthetic worlds is blurred and we highlight how such definitions are often oversimplified. We will also be smelling in this seminar.
