This eight-day American Studies travel course takes Rider and Westminster students to a fabulous international arts festival, Spoleto USA, to enjoy theater, choral, ballet, opera, jazz, symphonic, and chamber music events in the gorgeous city of Charleston, South Carolina, a mecca of culture, food, and easy living. Students will stay in an elegant hotel, the Embassy Suites, with large suites and private outdoor pool within walking distance of all events. In addition to enjoying concerts and plays, we participate in talkbacks and lectures, including exclusive interviews with maestros, singers, music journalists, and producers. The trip is organized so that participants hear all events featuring the Westminster Choir, the bedrock of Spoleto since 1977. Two highlights of this trip will be attending the opera The Magic Flute and seeing the famous New Orleans Jazz star Trombone Shorty. This unique course gives students an intimate, exciting introduction to music and Southern culture. [3 credits]
