Q:  How many credits will I receive for the class?
A:  The CBA 110/Introduction to Business class is worth 3 college credits.

Q:  What is the required text for the class?  Do I need to purchase it?
A:  The required text for the class is Business: A Changing World, Fifth Edition, Ferrell, Hirt, and Ferrell, McGraw-Hill Irwin, 2006.
You do not need to purchase the text.  The text is included in the cost of the program, and will be provided to you on the first day of class.

Q:  What type of work can I expect to do in the Introduction to Business course?
A:  Coursework will consist of readings, daily quizzes, group assignments, a computer simulation project, and homework.

Q:  What is the computer simulation project?
A:  The computer simulation allows you to “work for” a division of Nike, Inc., Pepsico, Inc., or Avon Products, Inc.  The simulation takes you through the creation of a product to its launch in the marketplace, helping you make financial decisions along the way to support its success.  Once you choose a division of one of the companies, you work your way through different positions such as Vice President of Product Development, VP of Marketing, VP of Sales, VP of Finance, Chief Financial Officer, and Chief Executive Officer.  You will work with a teammate to build your division, and on the last day of class, you will present your work to your classmates and parents!

Q:  What are the Leadership Workshops, and what topics will be covered?
A:  The Leadership Workshops are activities designed to engage participants in not only learning, but practicing leadership skills.  These workshops will take place twice a day with a different topic/activity at each workshop.  Topics include: Group Dynamics, Preparing for College Level Leadership, Negotiation, Ethics, Event Planning, Communication, Conflict Management, and Presentation Skills.  Also in the schedule is a Ropes/Challenge Course!

Q:  How can I go about requesting a transcript?

Program Questions

Q:  Can I attend just a few days of the CBA 110 class?
A:  No.  This program is designed as a two-week experience.  Participation and class attendance are crucial to learning the CBA 110 course material and are included as part of your final grade determination.  Due to the accelerated nature of this program and the teamwork required, attendance at all classes and Leadership Workshops is vital.

Q:  What does a typical day in the program consist of?
A:  The Leadership Through Business Summer Institute schedule will keep participants busy throughout the day.  Before class, participants will be provided breakfast in an on-campus dining location.  The Introduction to Business class will be held from 8:45 a.m. – 11:45 a.m.  After class, participants will have time to eat lunch and work on their computer simulation project.  A Leadership activity will be held in the afternoon.  After the workshop, participants will have a short break, then dinner.  A second Leadership activity will occur in the early evening.  After 8 p.m., participants will have time to do homework, readings, and journal entries – as well as relax and get some sleep!

Q:  Am I required to participate in the Institute over the weekend and attend the off-campus trips?
A:  During this weekend, participants are invited on trips to both Great Adventure and NYC.  While we encourage all participants to spend the full two weeks at the program, if a participant wishes to return home for the weekend, they may do so with the permission of their parents/guardians.
