Westminster Presents Chamber Music on February 11

The Westminster Choir College of Rider University Faculty Recital Series will continue on Sunday, February 11, 2007 at 3 p.m. with a performance of chamber music by Mozart, Beethoven and Brahms in Bristol Chapel on the Westminster campus in Princeton.

The program will include Mozart’s Piano Quartet in G Minor, KV 478, Beethoven’s Sonata in A for Piano and Violin, op. 47 “Kreutzer,” and Brahms’ Trio in B Major, op. 8 for Piano, Violin and ’cello.  The performers will be Phyllis Alpert Lehrer, piano; Denise Huizenga, violin; Daniel Lee, ’cello; and Susan Yeh, viola.

A member of Westminster’s piano faculty, Phyllis Alpert Lehrer is known internationally as a performer, teacher, clinician, author and adjudicator.  She has enjoyed an active concert career as a soloist and collaborative artist in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Japan, Taiwan and Russia.  Her performances have been praised for their “warmth and vibrancy” (London Times) and “admirable musicality” (New York Times).  Her recent orchestral appearances have included performances of Brahms’ Concerto No. 1 in D Minor, Beethoven’s Choral Fantasy and Schumann’s Piano Concerto.

A founding member of the International Society for the Study of Tension in Performance, she contributes regularly to the Music Teachers’ National Association, national Conference on Keyboard Pedagogy and World Piano Pedagogy Conference.  She is a member of the Piano Wellness Group, and she contributed several chapters to their acclaimed book A Symposium for Pianists and Teachers: Strategies to Develop Mind and Body for Optimal Performance published by Heritage Press.  She has
co-authored, with Barry Green, the Inner Game of Music Piano Workbook and written the practice suggestions for the four books of Etudes for Development of Musical Fingers from the Frances Clark Library. She earned a B.A. in music from the University of Rochester and the Eastman School of Music and an M.S. in piano from the Juilliard School of Music.

Violinist Denise Huizenga freelances in the Philadelphia area, doing most of her work with the Philadelphia Orchestra, including playing on their recent European tour and at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center.  She has also played with the Pennsylvania Ballet Theater, The Philadelphia Chamber Orchestra and the Philly Pops.  Denise is also a teaching artist for the Philadelphia Orchestra, working with children, doing chamber concerts and leading work-shops for teachers and other community outreach work.  Before moving to the east coast, Denise was a member of the Oregon Symphony for five years, and was a featured soloist on several occasions.  As a member of Portland’s acclaimed new music group Third Angle, she gave world premiere performances of works by many of today’s leading composers.  She holds a Bachelor of Music degree with academic honors from the New England Conservatory and a Master of Music from the University of Minnesota.

Susan Yeh is a graduate student in economics at Princeton University.  She holds a B.A. magna cum laude in economics from Harvard University, where she studied chamber music.  As a violinist and a self-taught violinist, she has played with the Harvard-Radcliffe Orchestra and the Princeton University Orchestra and participated in the Sewanee Summer Music Festival and the Killington Music Festival, and performed in independent recitals across the country.  While growing up in the Midwest, she was a prizewinner in local youth competitions on the piano and violin.  She is a co-founder of the Princeton Graduate Music Society and enjoys playing chamber music whenever the opportunity arises.

Westminster Choir College of Rider University is at the corner of Hamilton Avenue and Walnut Lane in Princeton.  Admission to the recital is $15 for adults and $10 for students and seniors.  For tickets or to receive Westminster’s 2006-2007 season catalog, call the box office at 609-921-2663.
