Home-Street-City: Cityscape Paintings
“Home-Street-City: Cityscape Paintings by Mari Lyons and John Dubrow” examines the urban experience, through paintings by two well-known New York painters whose work has never been shown together before. Curated by Deborah Rosenthal, Professor of Fine Arts and a New York painter and writer on contemporary art, the show features large-scale paintings of New York and Paris as well as smaller studies for these works. In the exhibition and the essays in the accompanying color catalog, “Home-Street-City” gives the viewer an in-depth look at the studio practice and process of two significant contemporary artists grappling with the life of the city in modern times.
An afternoon-into-evening conference on November 9 brings stellar figures in New York’s cultural life to the Rider campus to discuss the city, art, artists, and modern life – speakers will include Marshall Berman, Distinguished Professor at the City University of New York, and Jed Perl, Art Critic for The New Republic, as well as the artists themselves. A rare experimental short film on New York by Rudy Burckhardt will be projected during the evening.
