Baritone Elem Eley Will Perform October 16
This past summer baritone Elem Eley studied in Vienna through a Rider University fellowship for international study. He will present a recital inspired by his experience on Sunday, October 16, 2005 at 3 p.m., in Bristol Chapel on the Westminster campus in Princeton.
The program, titled Wiener Liederabend, will include Wolf’s Gedichte von Joseph v. Eichendorff, Mahler’s Fünf Rückertlieder, Beethoven’s celebrated song cycle An die ferne Geliebte, op. 98, as well as selected songs by Beethoven.
A member of Westminster’s voice faculty, Elem Eley enjoys a remarkably varied performing career, from oratorio and recital to premières of art songs, opera and cabaret music. . His recent engagements include the world première of Vera of Las Vegas, by Daron Hagen and Paul Muldoon; and appearances with the Symphony Orchestras of Charlotte, Kansas City, New Jersey, Sioux City and Springfield, the Orchestra of St. Luke's at Carnegie Hall, The Little Orchestra Society at Lincoln Center, the New England Symphonic Ensemble at Carnegie Hall, the Calvin Oratorio Society, Messiah in Avery Fisher Hall, the Fairfield County Chorale, and the New York Chamber Ensemble at Alice Tully Hall.
This past May he was soloist in Carmina Burana at Verizon Hall of Philadelphia’s Kimmel Center. He sang the title role of Don Giovanni for his début at the Operafestival di Roma, and has appeared in productions with the Opera Companies of Cincinnati, Hawaii, Shreveport and Syracuse, as well as Athena Grand Opera, the Sylvan Opera Festival, the Center for Contemporary Opera, and Musica Europa 2001. A frequent recitalist, Elem Eley won the Joy in Singing Award in 1996.
Eley will sail the high seas as Captain Corcoran of the H.M.S. Pinafore when he returns to Syracuse Opera in March of 2006; the current season also includes a gala benefit concert for the Lyric Opera of Waco in Texas and Brahms’ Ein Deutsches Requiem with Princeton Pro Musica.
Elem Eley’s acclaimed career as both a performer and educator is a perfect fit for the atmosphere of creative academia at Westminster Choir College. The College, best known for its tradition of choral excellence and exceptional performances with the great orchestras of the world, has become a center of excellence in solo vocal performance as well.
