Westminster Honors Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with Concert on January 26

Westminster Choir College of Rider University will pay tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with a special concert on Monday, January 26 at 7:30 p.m. in Bristol Chapel on the Westminster campus in Princeton.  Admission is free, and the community is invited to attend.

The program will include performances by the Westminster Jubilee Singers, directed by J. Donald Dumpson, and the Westminster Music Theater Ensemble, directed by Nova Thomas and accompanied by Cris Frisco.  Additionally, voice faculty members Elem Eley, baritone; Rochelle Ellis, soprano; and Margaret Cusack, soprano, will perform.  Eley will sing Lee Hoiby’s I Have a Dream, Ellis will sing Margaret Bonds’ I Too Sing America, and Cusack will sing Donald Dumpson’s arrangement of America the Beautiful

Opera Studies Director Daniel Beckwith will accompany graduate students Afton Battle, soprano, and Christopher Hodson, tenor, in performing operatic arias.  The evening will begin with a reading by Evelyn Thomas director of academic support services and coordinator of the Educational Opportunity Program.  It will conclude with Director of Choral Activities Joe Miller conducting all in attendance in singing Peter Lutkin’s Benediction followed by We Shall Overcome.
