New Recordings Bring the Westminster Sound to the World
"A Westminster Christmas II" features music of the season performed by the Westminster Choir conducted by Joe Miller, the Westminster Concert Bell Choir conducted by Kathleen Ebling-Thorne ‘84 and Ken Cowan, assistant professor of organ at Westminster. The repertoire includes Balulalow, Gerald Custer’s ‘75 MM’80 setting of a 16th- century Scottish translation of Vom Himmel hoc da komm ich her by Martin Luther, performed by the Westminster Choir.
ClassicsToday.com described the ensemble’s interpretation of Ralph Johnson’s arrangement of The Hills Are Bare at Bethlehem as a “gorgeous performance that demands several immediate repeats.” Organist Ken Cowan’s performances on the recording include Gaston Dethier’s Variations on Adeste Fideles and settings of In Dulce Jubilo by Marcel Dupré, Franz Liszt and Johann Sebastian Bach. The Westminster Concert Bell Choir, directed by Kathleen Ebling-Thorne, brings a special dimension to the recording, featuring works using both handbells and choirchimes, including Karen Lakey Buckwalter’s ‘74 arrangement of In The Bleak Midwinter and Cynthia Dobrinski‘s arrangement of We Three Kings.
The Westminster Concert Bell Choir is also featured in the “Thirtieth Anniversary Collection,” that was released this summer to commemorate the Westminster Concert Bell Choir’s 30th anniversary. It includes archival recordings of the choir performing with founding director Donald Allured and contemporary performances under the baton of Kathleen Ebling-Thorne.
Both recordings are available through Westminster’s online store – www.westminsterchoircollege.org or through most major download sites.
Additionally, the Westminster Choir and the Westminster Concert Bell Choir are featured on recordings that will benefit the Friends of the World Food Program – "A Princeton Christmas Vol. 1 and Vol. 2." You can learn more about these recordings at www.princetonchristmas.org.
