Britten: Albert Herring

Music by Benjamin Britten,
Libretto by Eric Crozier.
Based on a short story by Guy de Maupassant “Le rosier due Madame Husson”
World premiere Glyndebourne, England June 20, 1947

Set in a small English country village, this opera is a sweet and gentle comedy about a young man whose shyness and lack of social skills earns him the title of King of the May. Humiliated, rather than honored by this distinction, Albert’s personality becomes so completely altered that he turns the whole village topsy-turvy, and the pompous dignitaries who run it.

A delightful and extremely accessible contemporary opera, Albert Herring will be sung in English with the ideal cast of students from Westminster Choir College. The production will be fully staged and accompanied by chamber orchestra, as originally scored by Britten.
