Money Saving Tips on maintaining your Piano How Changes in the Instrument Affects Style and Interpretation

What does regulating mean? Why does my piano sound so bright? What happens inside my piano when I press a key? If you have ever asked these questions, this seminar could be the answer. David Forman, piano technician for Westminster Choir College, will address all of these topics. He will also discuss unison and octave tuning, and differences in tuning styles. He will also discuss what is good regulation and voicing, how it will make your piano sound better, and might even make it easier to play.

Sometimes problems happen, such as a sticking note or a squeak in the pedal. He will discuss various problems, how to make some easy repairs, and when you need to call the tuner. Most pianists don't know what is going on inside their piano. This seminar should make you more aware of the mechanics of your piano. During the second half of the day Kristen Topham and Lauren Kooistra will talk about how to play music written for earlier versions of the piano on our modern day instrument. They will survey the development of the piano from the 1700s to today, highlight the influence of this development over compositions and playing styles, and include demonstrations of playing and teaching repertoire from these different style periods.
