Swimming
Under new head coach Steve Fletcher, the Broncs swept Niagara in the season opener Friday. For the Rider men, freshman Sam Engle (Manheim, PA/Manheim Central) won the 200-yard freestyle (1:48.71) and the 200-yard backstroke (2:00.56), and swam on the winning 400-yard medley relay. For the Rider women, sophomore Melissa Morrissy (Horsham, PA/Hatboro-Horsham) won the 1,000-yard freestyle (11:03.21) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:23.43), while junior Melissa Michalov (Hatboro, PA/Hatboro-Horsham) won the 50-yard freestyle (25.44) and the 100-yard freestyle (55.33), and swam on the winning 400-yard medley relay. Freshman Bobby DeSandre (Trenton/Notre Dame) won the men's 200-yard IM (2:01.13) and the 200-yard butterfly (1:59.37), sophomore Dave Hoover (Lebanon, PA/Ceder Crest) won the 1000-yard freestyle (11:22.69), and sophomore Dave van Heerden (Oak Ridge/Jefferson) won the 100-yard freestyle (49.97). Sophomore Erin Moore (Northfield/Holy Spirit) won both the 1-meter dive (215.80) and the three-meter dive (206.10), freshman Briana Cohen (Pomona, NY/Ramapo) won the 200-yard freestyle (2:01.72), sophomore Megan Huhn (Langhorne, PA/Neshaminy) won the 200-yard IM (2:18.56), and junior Deanna Kazarnowicz (Allentown, PA/Salisbury) won the 200-yard backstroke (2:20.37).
Golf
The Broncs placed a best-ever runner-up at the ECAC Golf Championships. Senior Bill Grossman (Horsham, PA/Hatboro-Horsham) and sophomore Bob Whartenby (Lawrenceville/Lawrence) each shot a 76, tied for eighth overall among the 130 golfers. Senior Jason Gold (Mt. Holly/Holy Cross) and sophomore Sean Sexton (Horsham, PA/Hatboro-Horsham) each shot 78s, tied for 20th overall. Freshman Jarred Brechman (Bridgewater/Bridgewater-Raritian) shot an 88, placing 115th.
Field Hockey
The Broncs lost at Lafayette Wednesday night. Senior Janette Freeberg (Thorofare/West Deptford) gave Rider a 1-0 lead with her team-high ninth goal of the season. Rider junior goalkeeper Jen Cushinotto (Tuckahoe/Ocean City High) made 14 saves. The Broncs improved to 8-2 in the Northeast Conference with their third consecutive victory, defeating UMBC Sunday in an NEC game. Janette Freeberg gave Rider the only goal it needed less than five minutes into the game, and freshman Katie Conlon (Rockaway/Morris Knolls) scored her first collegiate goal for the insurance goal. Junior Krissy Merrill (Ocala, FL/Manheim Twp.) scored her fourth goal in the last three games with just four second remaining in the contest. Rider out-shot UMBC 11-6 Jen Cushinotto made three saves.
Krissy Merrill scored two goals, and assisted on the third goal, to lead Rider to a Northeast Conference win at St. Francis Saturday. Merrill scored an unassisted goal mid-way through the first half, and scored her sixth goal of the season with less than seven minutes remaining before half time. Merrill has now scored three goals in the last two games. Janette Freeberg scored with 16 seconds left in the first half to give Rider a 3-0 half time lead. Freshman Maddy Boulden (Brooklawn/Gloucester) assisted on Merrill's second goal, giving the rookie seven assists in 12 games. As of last week, Boulden ranked 13th in the nation with six assists in Rider's first 10 games. St. Francis scored with 5:37 left in the game to break up the shutout. Rider out-shot St. Francis 13-3. Jen Cushinotto made two saves. The Broncs defeated Monmouth for the second time in eight days in a Northeast Conference game Wednesday. Janette Freeberg broke a 1-1 tie with 12:31 left in the second half with her team-high sixth goal of the season. Kristen Merrill gave the Broncs a 1-0 lead with 11:13 left in the first half. Monmouth out-shot Rider 15-13. Jen Cushinotto made eight saves. The Broncs lost an NEC game with one second left in overtime at Siena. Freshman Christina Ang (Somers Point/Mainland Regional) scored her team-high sixth goal of the season to tie the score at 1-1. Jen Cushinotto made three saves. Freshman Katie Sebastian (Rockaway/Morris Knolls) scored her first collegiate goal 19 seconds into overtime to lead Rider to an NEC win over Monmouth. Maddy Boulden gave Rider a 1-0 lead. In overtime, Sebastian took a pass from sophomore Karen Pettyjohn (Georgetown, DE/Sussex Central) and scored the game-winner.
Volleyball
The Broncs lost a non-conference match at La Salle Tuesday. The Explorers defeated Rider 25-30, 30-22, 30-22, 30-23. Rider was led by freshman Jaclyn Levi (Exton, PA/Bishop Shanahan), who compiled 14 kills. Sophomore Laura Berger (Valhalla, NY/Our Lady of Good Counsel) compiled 40 assists, three service aces and 12 digs. Senior Evette Hoeffner (Fairlawn/Fairlawn), the national leader in digs, compiled 24 digs and nine kills for the Broncs. Sophomore Amy Householder (Darlington, PA/Blackhawk) added five service aces and eight kills. After winning two of the first three games, the Broncs lost a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference match to Siena Sunday. Siena defeated Rider 25-30, 30-13, 26-30, 30-27, 15-3. Jacyln Levi had 16 kills and 20 digs, Evette Hoeffner had 15 kills and 30 digs, and Amy Householder added 11 kills and 14 digs. Laura Berger added 52 assists.
The Broncs defeated Marist in the first Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference match of the season Saturday. Rider defeated Marist 30-20, 30-23, 30-22.
Jaclyn Levi compiled 18 kills and 17 digs, Evette Hoeffner added 15 kills and 17 digs, while Laura Berger added 29 assists and three service aces. Sophomore Lauren Niewender (Williston Park, NY/Mineola) added 15 digs, eight solo blocks and three service aces.
The Broncs defeated Lafayette, led by Evette Hoeffner, who compiled 14 kills and 15 digs. Jaclyn Levi added 10 kills and 12 digs, while Laura Berger had 21 assists. Lauren Niewender added a career-high eight service aces. Jaclyn Levi was named the MAAC Rookie of the Week for the last week of September.
W. Soccer
The Broncs scored a team-record eight goals in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference victory at Iona Tuesday. Freshman Tami Coyle (Sayreville/St. John Vianney) scored three goals, and senior Kristen Haagenson (Huntington, NY/Huntington) scored two goals and an assist to lead the Broncs. Senior Tracy Albrecht (Rockville Center, NY/South Side) added a goal and two assists, freshman Casey Fagan (Chews Landing/Paul VI) had a goal and an assist, and freshman Leah Craig (Sayreville/War Memorial) had two assists. Rider out-shot Iona 18-5. Rider sophomore goalkeeper Erin Wolleon (Bay Head/Pt. Pleasant Beach) made two saves for the victory. The previous record for Rider was six goals in a 1997 win over Howard. The Broncs defeated St. Peter's in a MAAC game Wednesday. Kristen Haagenson scored to give the Broncs the only goal they would need. Senior mid-fielder Kelli Wich (Manasquan/Wall) scored her first collegiate goal for the insurance goal. Rider out-shot St. Peter's 30-2. Erin Wolleon made two saves for her second consecutive shutout. The Broncs played Canisius to a scoreless tie in a MAAC game. Erin Wolleon made two saves for the shutout. Sophomore Sarah Artale (Jackson/Jackson) scored two goals, and assisted on the third, as Rider defeated Niagara in a MAAC game. Kristen Haagenson scored the game-winner. Senior Michele Herzog (Central Islip, NY/St. John Baptist) collected two assists. Erin Wolleon made eight saves.
M. Soccer
Canisius scored twice in the final nine minutes of the game to defeat Rider in a come-from-behind Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference victory Sunday. Rider took a 1-0 lead 14:50 into the second half on a goal by junior Phil Bedrin (Harrisburg, PA/Central Dauphin). Rider out-shot Canisius 16-12. Rider sophomore goalkeeper Brian Gill (Smithtown, NY/St. Anthony's) made six saves, all in the first half.
Phil Bedrin scored with seven minutes left in the first half to give Rider a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference win over Niagara Friday. The victory ended Rider's two-game losing streak, and the Broncs have now won three of their last five games. Rider out-shot Niagara 18-6. Brian Gill made three saves for his first shutout of the season. The Broncs lost their final non-conference game of the season Tuesday, falling to Lehigh. Brian Gill made four saves. The Broncs defeated Iona in a MAAC game. Rider took a 2-0 lead with 26 minutes left in the second half on a penalty kick by senior Bob Francis (Richboro/Council Rock). The Broncs took a 1-0 lead with five minutes left in the first half on a goal by junior Jake Trainor (Sparta/Sparta). Trainor and Francis share the team lead with three goals each. Brian Gill made 5 saves.
Cross Country
The Rider men placed seventh of 10 teams, and the Rider women were 10th of 13 teams at the Leopard Invitational, hosted Saturday by Lafayette College. For the men, sophomore Robert Broomhead (Absecon/Absegami) placed first for Rider for the first time ever, 19th overall, in a time of 27:04.3. Senior David DeJong (Medford/Shawnee) was second among Broncs, 29th among the 105 runners, in a time of 27:23. For the women, senior Uli Bromme (Tenafly/Tenafly) was first for Rider, 31st overall in 22:36. Sophomore Kate Henninger (Whiting/Manchester Twp.) was second among Broncs, 51st among the 124 runners in a time of 23:23. Senior Helder Santo (Clark/A.L. Johnson) placed 36th (27:37), freshman Jeff Zola (Deptford/Deptford) was 49th (28:00), freshman Brian Styler (Cranford/Cranford) was 58th (28:22.1), senior Mike Fulton (Maple Shade/Maple Shade) was 78th (29:08), freshman Matt Catinella (Philadelphia, PA/Archbishop Ryan) was 82nd (29:16), sophomore Tom Misiak (Bellmawr/Triton Regional) was 86th (29:37) freshman Joe Shinn (Riverside/Riverside) was 89th (29:52), freshman Clint Rudnick (Deptford/Deptford) was 101st (32:02), junior Rob Croskey (Glenside, PA/Bishop McDevitt) was 103rd (33:19) and senior Kevin Chapman (Long Valley, NY/W. Freshman Sarah Peterson (Belle Meade/Montgomery) was 57th (23:32), senior Adrienne Alexander (Franklinville/Sacred Heart) was 75th (24:07), freshman Megan O'Halloran (Pennsauken/Pennsauken) was 100th (25:21), senior Karen Johanson (Jackson/Jackson) was 108th (25:57), freshman Erica DellaBonta (New Hyde Park, NY/New Hyde Park) was 118th (27:30), junior Melissa Campbell (New Hope, PA/Truman) was 119th (27:36), freshman Elizabeth Buatti (Rocky Hill, CT/Coginchaug) was 121st (27:39) and sophomore Laura Henry (Horsham, PA/Hatboro-Horsham) was 122nd (30:36).
At the Paul Short Run David DeJong placed 46th among the 274 runners, covering the 8k course in 25:47.87. Uli Bromme placed 75th among the 269 runners, covering the 6k course in 22:48.74. Kate Henninger was 151st, and Robert Broomhead placed 97th. Helder Santo was 126th, Jeff Zola was 212th, Matt Catinella was 224th, Brian Styler placed 231st, and Kevin Chapman was 248th. Sarah Peterson placed 169th. Adrienne Alexander was 229th, Megan O'Halloran placed 237th, Erica DellaBonta was 260th and Karen Johanson was 262nd.
W. Tennis
At Iona, sophomore Meredith Dossin (Cranbury/Princeton) and senior Amanda Smith (Mays Landing/Oakcrest) won both singles and doubles. The Broncs defeated Canisius, led by senior Deanna Dovak (Oakdale, NY/Connetquot), Meredith Dossin and Amanda Smith, who all won both singles and doubles. Against St. Joseph's, junior Kristen Zigo (Neptune/St. Rose) won at first singles, and the team of Smith and Dossin won at doubles.
M. Tennis
The Broncs lost to Iona, despite freshman Bernard Balagula (Cliffside Park) winning first singles. Against FDU, junior Isaac Rugg (Kingston, NY/Kingston) won both fifth singles and third doubles for Rider. Junior Andrew Ducz (Basking Ridge/Ridge) won sixth singles. Against Canisius, senior Tim Koch (Langhorne, PA/Neshaminy) won third singles and second doubles. Senior Doug Kreszl (Seaside Park/Central Regional) won at sixth singles. Rider defeated Wagner as Bernard Balagula and Tim Koch each won singles and doubles. Doug Kresel also won sixth singles.
