Golf

The Broncs placed a best-ever runner-up at the Eastern College Athletic Conference Golf Championships to end the fall season on a positive note. The Broncs compiled a 308, second only to Hartford's 299, in the 26-team event. Senior Bill Grossman (Horsham, PA/Hatboro-Horsham) and sophomore Bob Whartenby (Lawrenceville/Lawrence) each shot a 76, tied for eighth overall among the 130 golfers. Senior Jason Gold (Mt. Holly/Holy Cross) and sophomore Sean Sexton (Horsham, PA/Hatboro-Horsham) each shot 78s, tied for 20th overall. Freshman Jarred Brechman (Bridgewater/Bridgewater-Raritian) shot an 88, placing 115th. Team scoring: Hartford 299, Rider 308, Binghamton 309, Colgate 309, Boston College 310, Harvard 314, Towson 314, Brown 320, Monmouth 320, Long Island 320, Bucknell 321, Fordham 322, Sacred Heart 322, UMBC 323, Robert Morris 323, St. Francis 325, Mt. The Broncs finished in fifth place in the 11-team Duquesne Invitational. After shooting an eighth-best 325 on Sunday, the Broncs shot a 313 on Monday to finish with a 638. Bob Whartenby shot an 82 on Monday to finish with a 157, best among the Broncs and 13th among the 60 golfers. Jason Gold and Sean Sexton each finished with a 160, 18th overall. Sexton shot a Rider-best 76 on Monday, while Gold shot a 77 Monday. Bill Grossman had a 78 on Monday to finish with a 161, 23rd overall. Freshman Matt Dougherty (Ardmore, PA/Archbishop Carroll) shot an 88 Monday to finish at 177.

Field Hockey

The Broncs defeated Monmouth for the second time in eight days in a Northeast Conference game Wednesday. Senior Janette Freeberg (Thorofare/West Deptford) broke a 1-1 tie with 12:31 left in the second half with her team-high sixth goal of the season. Freeberg now has 48 career points, eighth highest ever at Rider. Junior Kristen Merrill (Ocala, FL/Manheim Twp.) gave the Broncs a 1-0 lead with 11:13 left in the first half. Monmouth out-shot Rider 15-13. Rider junior goalkeeper Jen Cushinotto (Tuckahoe/Ocean City High) made eight saves.

The Broncs lost a Northeast Conference game with one second left in overtime at Siena. The victory for the Saints avenged a 6-0 Rider win over Siena less than two weeks ago at Rider. Rider freshman Christina Ang (Somers Point/Mainland Regional) scored her team-high sixth goal of the season with 22:41 left in the second half to tie the score at 1-1. Rider out-shot Siena 11-5. Jen Cushinotto made three saves.

Freshman Katie Sebastian (Rockaway/Morris Knolls) scored her first collegiate goal 19 seconds into overtime to lead Rider to a Northeast Conference win over Monmouth. Freshman Maddy Boulden (Brooklawn/Gloucester) gave Rider a 1-0 lead eight minutes into the second half on an assist from Janette Freeberg. In overtime, Sebastian took a pass from sophomore Karen Pettyjohn (Georgetown, DE/Sussex Central) and scored the game-winner. Rider out-shot Monmouth 13-12. Jennifer Cushinotto was credited with three saves. The Broncs saw their four-game winning streak come to an end with a loss at Lehigh. Krissy Merrill got Rider on the board with her second goal in the last two games and third goal of the season. Rider trailed 4-1 before senior Alison Waters (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall) scored her second goal of the season. Jen Cushinotto made three saves. Janette Freeberg scored a goal and an assist to lead Rider to a Northeast Conference victory over St. Francis-PA. Rider out-shot St. Francis 22-0. With three points Sunday, Freeberg now has 45 career points, 10th highest ever at Rider. Freeberg has four goals and two assists in the last three games. Freeberg gave Rider a 1-0 lead, and Alison Waters scored just five minutes into the second half to give Rider a 2-0 lead. Sophomore Jennifer Mann (Allentown, PA/William Allen) scored with 19:45 remaining for the final score. Maddy Boulden assisted on the first goal and now has six assists in seven games to rank among the national leaders.

Volleyball

The Broncs defeated the Leopards, led by senior Evette Hoeffner (Fairlawn/Fairlawn), who compiled 14 kills and 15 digs. Freshman Jaclyn Levi (Exton, PA/Bishop Shanahan) added 10 kills and 12 digs, while sophomore Laura Berger (Valhalla, NY/Our Lady of Good Counsel) had 21 assists. Sophomore Lauren Niewender (Williston Park, NY/Mineola) added a career-high eight service aces. Jaclyn Levi was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week for all contests played the last week of September. The Broncs split their two matches at the Blue Devil Invitational, hosted by Central Connecticut State University. The Broncs were led by Jaclyn Levi, who compiled 29 kills in seven games Saturday. Laura Berger added 88 assists in the two matches, while Evette Hoeffner added 22 kills and 32 digs in the two matches Saturday.

W. Soccer

The Broncs defeated St. Peter's in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game Wednesday. Senior Kristen Haagenson (Huntington, NY/Huntington) scored her second goal of the season and the ninth of her career 3:40 into the second half to give the Broncs the only goal they would need. Haagenson now has 23 career points, second highest ever at Rider. Senior mid-fielder Kelli Wich (Manasquan/Wall) scored her first collegiate goal with 12 minutes left in the game for the insurance goal. Rider out-shot St. Peter's 30-2. Rider sophomore goalkeeper Erin Wolleon (Bay Head/Pt. Pleasant Beach) made two saves for her second consecutive shutout. The Broncs played Canisius to a scoreless tie in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game Sunday. Rider out-shot Canisius 13-4. Erin Wolleon made two saves for the shutout.

Sophomore Sarah Artale (Jackson/Jackson) scored two goals, and assisted on the third, as Rider defeated Niagara in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game Friday. Artale scored just four minutes into the game to give the Broncs a 1-0 lead. Kristen Haagenson scored the game-winner just five minutes later. Artale scored her team-high sixth goal of the season 10 minutes into the second half for the final score. Senior Michele Herzog (Central Islip, NY/St. John Baptist), the leader of the Bronc defense, collected two assists. Both teams took 16 shots. Erin Wolleon made eight saves.

The Broncs scored 3 second half goals to defeat Albany and end their 5-game losing streak. Freshman Casey Fagan (Chews Landing/Paul VI) tied the score at 1-1 3:19 in the second half, and freshman Tami Coyle (Sayreville/St. John Vianney) scored her first collegiate goal to give the Broncs a 2-1 lead. Sophomore Colleen Evans (Bay Head/St.Rose) scored her team-high fourth goal of the season and second in two days for the final score. Erin Wolleon. made seven saves. Against Lafayette, Colleen Evans scored 7 minutes into the second half to tie the score at 1-1. Erin Wolleon made 7 saves.

M. Soccer

The Broncs lost their final non-conference game of the season Tuesday, falling to Lehigh. Both teams took eight shots. Rider sophomore goalkeeper Brian Gill (Smithtown, NY/St. Anthony's) made four saves.

The Broncs defeated Iona in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game. Rider took a 2-0 lead with 26 minutes left in the second half on a penalty kick by senior Bob Francis (Richboro/Council Rock). Francis hit the goal post on a penalty kick in the first half. The Broncs took a 1-0 lead with five minutes left in the first half on a goal by junior Jake Trainor (Sparta/Sparta). Trainor and Francis share the team lead with three goals each. Brian Gill made 5 saves.

Cross Country

The Rider men placed 26th and the Rider women 32nd of 39 teams at the 28th annual Paul Short Run, hosted by Lehigh University. For the men, senior David Dejong (Medford/Shawnee) placed first for Rider, 46th overall among the 274 runners, covering the 8k course in 25:47.87. For the women, senior Uli Bromme (Tenafly/Tenafly) placed first for Rider, 75th overall among the 269 runners, covering the 6k course in 22:48.74. Sophomore Kate Henninger (Whiting/Manchester Twp.) was second for Rider, 151st overall (23:40.58). Sophomore Robert Broomhead (Absecon/Absegami) placed second for the Rider men, 97th overall (26:29.24). Senior Helder Santo (Clark/A.L. Johnson) was third for Rider, 126th overall (26:44.69), freshman Jeff Zola (Deptford/Deptford) was 212th (27:46.24), freshman Matt Catinella (Philadelphia, PA/Archbishop Ryan) was 224th (27:59.07), freshman Brian Styler (Cranford/Cranford) placed 231st (28:10.22), and senior Kevin Chapman (Long Valley, NY/W. Morris Central) was 248th (28:50.19). Freshman Sarah Peterson (Belle Meade/Montgomery) placed third for Rider, 169th overall (23:56.09). Senior Adrienne Alexander (Franklinville/Sacred Heart) was 229th (24:52.97), freshman Megan O'Halloran (Pennsauken/Pennsauken) placed 237th (25:24.98), freshman Erica DellaBonta (New Hyde Park, NY/New Hyde Park) was 260th (27:54.05) and senior Karen Johanson (Jackson/Jackson) was 262nd (28:16.42).

W. Tennis

The Broncs defeated Canisius Sunday, led by senior Deanna Dovak (Oakdale, NY/Connetquot), sophomore Meredith Dossin (Cranbury/Princeton) and senior Amanda Smith (Mays Landing/Oakcrest), who all won both singles and doubles. Against St. Joseph's, junior Kristen Zigo (Neptune/St. Rose) won at first singles, and the team of Smith and Dossin won at third doubles.

M. Tennis

The Broncs lost to FDU Tuesday. Junior Isaac Rugg (Kingston, NY/Kingston) won both fifth singles and third doubles for Rider. Junior Andrew Ducz (Basking Ridge/Ridge) won sixth singles. Against Canisius, senior Tim Koch (Langhorne, PA/Neshaminy) won third singles and second doubles. Senior Doug Kreszl (Seaside Park/Central Regional) won at sixth singles. Rider defeated Wagner as freshman Bernard Balagula (Cliffside Park) and Tim Koch each won singles and doubles. Doug Kresel also won sixth singles.
