After winning their first three games of the season, the Broncs have now lost four straight, dropping a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game to Manhattan Wednesday. Rider trailed 3-0 before freshman Casey Fagan (Chews Landing/Paul VI) scored her first collegiate goal. Rider out-shot Manhattan 19-16. Rider sophomore goalkeeper Erin Wolleon (Bay Head/Pt. Pleasant Beach) made eight saves. Despite out-shooting the visiting Bearcats 24-15, Rider lost to Binghamton. Erin Wolleon made nine saves. Howard scored two second half goals to defeat Rider in Washington, D.C. The Broncs took a 1-0 lead on a goal by sophomore Sarah Artale (Jackson/Jackson). Howard scored three minutes into the second half to tie the score, and scored the game-winner in the 74th minute. Howard out-shot Rider 15-13. Erin Wolleon made 10 saves. Wolleon was named the MAAC Player of the Week. Rider saw its three-game winning streak end with a loss to Northeastern. The Huskies out-shot Rider 33-6. For the Broncs, Erin Wolleon made a Rider-record 20 saves. Sarah Artale scored two goals, the second coming in the 116th minute of play, to lead Rider to an overtime victory over Elon.

Junior Jake Trainor (Sparta/Sparta) scored two goals to lead Rider to a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference win over Manhattan Tuesday in a game that was originally scheduled to be played at Manhattan. Following a scoreless first half, Trainor scored from 20-yards out to give the Broncs the lead just :47 into the second half. Junior Phil Bedrin (Harrisburg, PA/Central Dauphin) scored his first goal of the season, and junior Stefan Borta (Roebling) scored for the final score. Both teams had 19 shots. Rider senior Augie Perez (Ewing/Commonwealth) made his collegiate debut by making 13 saves. Perez was a last minute replacement for Brian Gill, who was injured during pre-game warm-ups. The Broncs held Delaware scoreless for 111 minutes before losing in Newark. The Broncs have now gone overtime in four of the five games they've played this year. Brian Gill made eight saves. The Broncs came back to tie Temple. Rider senior Todd Armstrong (Spotsylvania, VA/Courtland) scored with less than 20 minutes left in the second half to tie the score at 2-2. Trailing 1-0, Rider tied the score mid-way through the first half on a goal by senior Bob Francis (Richboro, PA/Council Rock). Brian Gill made four saves. Junior Ryan Gallagher (Hanover, PA/South Western) scored with 15 minutes left in the second half to tie the score, giving the Broncs a tie at Stony Brook.
Volleyball
After winning twice on Friday, the Broncs dropped a pair of five-game matches on Saturday in the Rider Invitational. The all-tournament team included freshman Jaclyn Levi (Exton, PA/Bishop Shanahan). Against Quinnipiac, Rider won the first two games before losing 29-31, 28-30, 30-27, 30-25, 15-12. The Broncs were led by Jaclyn Levi, who compiled 17 kills and 26 digs. Senior Evette Hoeffner (Fairlawn/Fairlawn) added 13 kills and 36 digs, while sophomore Laura Berger (Valhalla, NY/Our Lady of Good Counsel) had 67 assists. Against Hartford, Rider again won the first two games before losing 35-37, 26-30, 30-24, 30-17, 15-13. For the Broncs, Levi had 17 kills and 17 digs, and Berger had 40 assists. Hoeffner added 15 kills and 24 digs. The Rider Broncs defeated Princeton for the first time since 1982 and just the second time ever in their 14 meetings, in the first round of the Rider Invitational. The Broncs came back to defeat LIU in the nightcap 30-12, 32-30, 30-28. Against Princeton, the Broncs won 30-23, 27-30, 27-30, 30-28, 15-12, led by Jaclyn Levi and Laura Berger. Levi compiled 21 kills and 30 digs, while Berger added a career-high 51 assists. Sophomore Amy Householder (Darlington, PA/Blackhawk) added 17 kills, and Evette Hoeffner contributed 31 digs and 11 kills. Against LIU, Levi had 29 kills, and Berger added 42 assists.
Rider won its own Rider Classic volleyball tournament, and now owns a winning record for the first time since finishing the 1995 season. The All-Tournament team included Evette Hoeffner and Jaclyn Levi. Rider defeated Drexel for the first time since 1985, led by freshman Jaclyn Levi (Exton, PA/Bishop Shanahan), senior Evette Hoeffner (Fairlawn/Fairlawn) and sophomore Amy Householder (Darlington, PA/Blackhawk). Levi compiled 12 kills and 18 digs, Hoeffner had 11 kills and 20 digs, and Householder had 10 kills. Sophomore Laura Berger (Valhalla, NY/Lady of Good Counsel) added 25 assists, four blocks and a pair of service aces. The Broncs came back to defeat Wagner, led by Levi, who compiled 15 kills and 13 digs. Hoeffner added 11 kills and 19 digs, and Householder added 11 kills and 14 digs. Berger contributed 29 assists and four blocks for the Broncs.
Field Hockey
Freshman Stephanie Corradino (Oceanport/Shore Regional) scored her first collegiate goal to lead Rider to victory at La Salle. Corradino scored 8:10 into the game for all of the scoring. Rider out-shot La Salle 8-7. Rider junior goalkeeper Jen Cushinotto (Tuckahoe/Ocean City) made six saves for the shutout.
Senior Janette Freeberg (Thorofare/West Deptford) scored two goals, and senior Alison Waters (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall) added two assists, to lead Rider to a Northeast Conference victory over Siena. Rider got the only goal it needed from freshman Maddy Boulden (Brooklawn/Gloucester) 18: 46 into the game, and Freeberg scored less than six minutes later to give the Broncs a 2-0 lead at the half. Freshman Christina Ang (Somers Point/Mainland Regional) scored her team-high fourth goal of the season less than nine minutes into the second half to seal the victory. Junior Krissy Merrill (Ocala, FL/Manheim Twp.) and sophomore Jennifer Mann (Allentown, PA/William Allen) also scored for the Broncs. Rider out-shot Siena 34-3. Jen Cushinotto played the first 60 minutes and made one save. Freshman Michelle Sciascia (Cheshire, CT/Cheshire) made one save in her first collegiate action for Rider. Freeberg now has 42 career points, 11th highest ever at Rider.
Despite holding a 2-0 lead with just 20 minutes left to play, the Broncs lost a Northeast Conference game at Quinnipiac. The game was a re-match of the 2000 NEC Title Game, won by Rider, 1-0. Rider took a 1-0 lead when freshman Christina Ang (Somers Point/Mainland Regional) scored five minutes into the second half, and the Broncs went up 2-0 on a goal by senior Janette Freeberg (Thorofare/West Deptford). Freshman Maddy Boulden (Brooklawn/Gloucester) assisted on both Rider goals. Quinnipiac scored the game-winner with 6:16 left in the second half. The Braves cut the lead to 2-1 with 18:51 left to play, and tied the score at 2-2 four minutes later. Jen Cushinotto made five saves. The Broncs began defense of their Northeast Conference title by defeating UMBC in the first NEC game of the season. Christina Ang scored her first two collegiate goals, while Maddy Boulden added a goal and two assists.
Cross Country
The men's team placed eighth of 15 teams, and the women were 12th of 18 teams at the Monmouth Invitational. For the men, senior David Dejong (Medford/Shawnee) placed first for Rider, 18th overall, covering the 8,000 meter course in 27:04.3. For the women, senior Uli Bromme (Tenafly/Tenafly) placed first for Rider, 25th overall, covering the 5,000 meter course in 19:50.9. Sophomore Robert Broomhead (Absecon/Absegami) placed second for Rider, 54th among the 164 runners, in 28:01.6. Freshman Matt Catinella (Philadelphia, PA/Archbishop Ryan) was 80th (28:54.9), senior Helder Santo (Clark/A.L. Johnson) was 81st (28:57.1), freshman Brian Styler (Cranford/Cranford) was 85th (29:06.9), and freshman Jeff Zola (Deptford/Deptford) was 86th (29:16.2). Sophomore Kate Henninger (Whiting/Manchester Twp.) was second for Rider, 89th overall (20:50.2), freshman Megan O'Halloran (Pennsauken/Pennsauken) placed 98th (21:00.0) among the 204 runners, senior Adrienne Alexander (Franklinville/Sacred Heart) was 13th (22:08.9), freshman Sarah Peterson (Belle Meade/Montgomery) was 150th (22:36.8), senior Karen Johanson (Jackson/Jackson) was 166th (23:36.1), freshman Erica DellaBonta (New Hyde Park, NY/New Hyde Park) was 175 (24:17.4), freshman Liz Buatti (Rocky Hill, CT/Coginchaug) was 176th (24:28.7), and junior Melissa Campbell (New Hope, PA/Truman) was 188th (26:20.5). The cross country season began at the Fordham Invitational, with the men placing 10th and the women finishing 11th in the 17-team field. David Dejong placed 20th among the 177 runners, covering the 5-mile Van Cortland Park course in 27:02.0. Uli Bromme placed first for the Rider women, 39th overall among the 154 runners, covering the 5k course in 20:19.3. Kate Henninger placed second for Rider, 48th overall. Adrienne Alexander was 113th, Melissa Cardwell was 120th. Senior Helder Santo finished second for Rider, 88th overall, in 28:31.7. In the men's frosh race, Matt Catinella placed fourth and Brian Styler was sixth. In the women's frosh race, Megan O'Halloran was fourth.
Golf
The Broncs shot their best round of golf in 10 years, scoring a 294 to defeat Manhattan Tuesday at Olde York Country Club. For the Broncs, senior Jason Gold (Mt. Holly/Holy Cross), sophomore Bob Whartenby (Lawrenceville/Lawrence) and senior Bill Grossman (Horsham, PA/Hatboro-Horsham) all shot 73s on the par 71 course. Also for Rider, sophomore Sean Sexton (Horsham, PA/Hatboro-Horsham) shot a 75 and senior Mike Ratz (Manasquan/Wall) had a 77. Fairleigh Dickinson also competed but had two players withdraw and did not register a team score. On the Rider "B" team, freshman Matt Dougherty (Ardmore, PA/Archbishop Carroll) shot a 74, and sophomore Shane Gingrich (Lebanon, PA/Cedar Crest) had a 78.
The Broncs placed 12th of 17 teams at the Leo Keenan Invitational, hosted by St. Bonaventure University. After shooting a season-best 303 on Sunday, the Broncs had a 306 on Monday. Bob Whartenby shot a 75 on the par 70 Bartlett County Club Course to finish with a 148 (73 on Sunday), good for 20th place among the 85 golfers. Jason Gold shot a 78 to finish with a 150 (72 on Sunday), to tie for 27th. Sean Sexton came back to shoot a 75 on Monday after having an 81 on Sunday, and finished 59th with a 156. Bill Grossman shot a 78 on Monday to finish with a 157 (79 on Sunday), tied for 65th overall. Mike Ratz shot 79s on both days to finish 70th overall with a 158. The Broncs began the 2001 fall home season with victories over Monmouth and St. Peter's Tuesday at Olde York Country Club. Rider was led by Bill Grossman, who shot a 76 on the par 71 course. Bob Whartenby had a 77, Jason Gold, Sean Sexton and Mike Ratz all shot 79s.
W. Tennis
The Broncs swept the Terriers Wednesday for their first win of the fall season. Rider was led by seniors Kristen Zigo (Neptune/St. Rose) and Deanna Dovak (Oakdale, NY/Connetquot). Zigo won first singles, Dovak remained undefeated with a victory at second singles, and the two paired up to win first doubles. The Broncs fell to Siena. Sophomore Meredith Dossin (Cranbury/Princeton) won both third singles and third doubles for the Broncs. Deanna Dovak and sophomore Bandi Plummer (Bridgeton/Cumberland Regional) won singles matches for the Broncs, while Dossin teamed with senior Amanda Smith (Mays landing/Oakcrest) to win third doubles.
Kristen Zigo and senior Deanna Dovak won singles and doubles in a loss to Monmouth. Zigo won first singles and Dovak won second singles. Zigo teamed with Brandi Plummer to win first singles, and Dovak teamed with freshman Stephanie Petrasko to win second doubles.
